10mo old TAG HELP!  Reply with quote

Hi! Its been awhile! Hope all has been good with everyone. My baby has been doing great! Growing and learning new things everyday. He's 10 months old now and talks up a storm! Lol. But we've run into a problem:( I'm not sure what's been going on with him? But the last few days he's been acting very strange, just wants to be pet.or picked up. But also he's loosing feathers!! 5-6 full ones and many, many little down feathers. I don't know if he's molting?or picking/plucking his feathers? I'm so worried! Somethings have changed around the house that might have stressed him out? Or like I said he might be molting? How can I tell which one? Today I left for about an hour and came home to a bunch of down feathers on the bottem of the cage. So I wasn't home when he lost them to know if he picked them? Or they just fell out? But it was kinda a lot to have just fall out in an hour. I don't know? I'm so worried! I don't want him to be sad this whole time,or have something bothering him and I don't even know it, so he pulls out his beautiful feathers! But it is the beginning of fall, don't greys molt around that time of year? Ahh!! Someone help. I've never seen him act like this? Somethings bothering him. So if someone kinda knows what this sounds like, I'll listen to what anyone has to say. Thanks guys!

first of all, take a deep breath and calm down.
now observe him and look if you see any bold spots. really bold to the flesh. if not, it might be that he is changing his feathers. my grey is also changing her feathers.
greys are very sensitive and little changes can upset them quick. what kind of deathers do you see on the floor, the upper feathers or also the warm small ones he has below. in that case he is plucking.
what to do? try to find out what has been changed around him, try to give it some more personell attention. in case you se it plucking, don't say anything. it might make it worse. just ignore it.
give him every day a nice shower with warm water and aloe vera. that will help against the itching.
keep us informed

more info..  Reply with quote

The feathers I'm seeing are the all white fluffy ones. And I mean there was a lot! That was going on for the last 3 days with no eating, barly drinking, not playing like normale. But he would still talk. Now today, there's been no feathers I've noticed, he's eating more, and playing more.he's lost a total of 11 ounces in 4 days! I am so bothered by it. Of coarse I'm going to get alittle freaked, he's my second child Smile but I just can't figure this out because nothing that I'm aware of has changed. His diet, location, play time, people in the house, nothing. Oh,no there are no bald spots. But you know what it looks like? Like he's chewing his feathers in half! Stright across a clean cut too. Like someone took a toe nail clipper and clipped it in half. That's what I see. So do you possibly know what he's trying to say by doing that? And what I can do to solve it? Oh, and I wanted to ask you, he is my only bird at the time, do you think it might benifit him to get another parrot? Maybe they would entertain eachother while I'm gone? Kinda give him a buddy? I would of coarse get it from the same lady I got my current one from. So guys any ideas love to hear them! Thanks!!

the fluffy ones you say, that might be plucking. it could be good to give it a friewnd. then it will have ocmpany and not feel bored at all.
if it didn't est for so many days, it might be a medical problem. i think it will be wise to take it to an avian doctor to have check up. don't go to a normal vet as they normaly don't know much about birds. let him have a complete check just to be sure it is not a fisical problem.
if your bird is a plucker, don't pay too much attention to it as it might get worse.
i have a plucking cockatoo as well and the more i tell her to stop with that, the more she is plucking, so if you do as if nothing is wrong, it might stop with it.
what kind of food are you giving? seeds, pellets fruit, vegies?
maybe he didn't eat because of changing feathers. i am not sure.,
best you can do is to get a check up. after that we can see what might be good.

thank you!  Reply with quote

Hi! I decided it wouldn't be a good idea to get another parrot in the worrie it might make things worse.it could make "FeFe" (my grey) jealous. To see me around another bird. Or he could get more upset about the new change,as you know greys don't take big changes very well. I really think this is an attention getting behavior, I'm not sure why? His attention amount has not increased or decreased. So I don't know why he's made this decion? And I was wondering how often do you guys bath your birds? I think I need to be giving him more baths its hard though because he hates them so much! Well he's still not eating normal but he's eating. If he dosent start gaining weight by tomorrow night I'm going to take him in. Ill let you know. And I wanted to say thank you so much for answering alexandraatje your so helpful and its so nice to have someone actully care and take the time to respond! Lol its kinda like were the only two people ever on here? But really your great cause I get over worried and its nice to be able to jump on here! Thank you!

i shower my birds daily. are you able to take your Fefe on your arm? in that case take him with you under the shower. I shower together with my cockatoo and amazones. they like it. one day more than the other.
you can make him get used to it by first watching you from a perch under the shower and little by little you put the perch closer until he can get slightly wet. he will enjoy it finaly, just do it step by step.
i'm glad to be some help to you. i am normaly on the dutch forum wich you can find left in the colomn, but i like it here as well. eventhough it is not so busy here as on the nl site. hahaha
keep an eye on his eating. that is very important. birds don't want to show it when they are ill and when you finaly find out it is often too late. don;t wait too long.
