15 year old African Grey  Reply with quote

Well I was talking to a friend of mine who has many birds among them are two greys. She is allergic to the dander and is trying to find a home for one of them. She offered to let me have the female while she would keep the male(not a bonded pair) to cut down on the dander. She is also getting older and so she needs to cut down on the number of birds that she has. I am thinking about taking the female and have arranged to see her again. I just don't know what to do because I am also moving this weekend.
I would also like to hear from grey owners about what they are like. I know many greys but have never lived with one.

I think it really depends on the bird.....Oskar is strange...he LOVES change...he likes having his toys switched up and stuff.....is there a way she could keep her until you can get moved and settled? I think that would be ideal.....but if it's necessary, I'm sure if you could get her into the new house, she might enjoy watching everything from her cage....like I said, I have a weirdo bird...so I don't know how this would work with her.

My Grey is overall very independant. She's very shy and nervous about new places. She's quiet, in the sense that she doesn't scream, but is very vocal by talking, whistling, clicking, mimicing other birds, and doing other sound effects. She's very intolerant of other birds and tries to bite all of them. She's scared of new toys, and takes a few days to accept them. She bites strangers if they try to touch her.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner but I currently don't have internet access. I ended up adopting her and found out that she is 16+ not 15 as originally thought. She seems to be settling in very well and loves scritches.
I also found out this week that I have allergies and am miserable but lucky I have a friend who helped me pick out some meds that will hopefully work and bring me back to normal. As long as I don't go outside I should be fine.

Your allergies may not be because of the bird. I ran into an article stating that often it is the food the bird is eating that causes the person to be allergic! It blamed molds in the food, and stated case after case of people able to tolerate their birds' dander once their birds' diets were cleaned up! The website was moldpets.org.

I not allergic to the birds. I just moved out into the country. Right outside my door is at least an arce of grass/weeds and such that are causing me greif. I'm fine when I'm inside with just my birds but if I am too close to the window or outside then the allergies attack.
