another biting problem with my grey  Reply with quote

so,
i just acquired a 6 month old grey. i love her already. she is fiesty and beautiful. i am some what inexperienced with owning a bird. did a lot of reading though before purchasing her and realized/appreciate the amount of time and energy required to keep this bird in optimal mental and physical health.
i have only had her a week. i own my own business so i transport her back and forth from home to office, therefore keeping her at my side all day. i have cage and toys at both locations.
she started biting me this week. i am very upset. biting hard enough to draw blood. she is not aggressive or scared. she just bites sometimes. haven't had her wings clipped yet. she flies on my head and follows me from room to room. squels when i leave the room and she can't find me.
please help.

Hi Laurie Very Happy Welcome to the forum!

This should be easy enough to fix, because she seems like she's bonded to you and loves your attention. When she bites, say NO! In a firm voice, and put her in her cage, and leave the room. Since she calls for you when you leave the room, she obviously doesn't like it when you leave her alone. Ignore her totally for at least 15 minutes. Then return and try handling her again, and if she bites again, do it all over. If she doesn't, reward her. Soon she'll learn that biting has consequences. My Grey used to bite, never hard enough to draw blood, but it still hurt, and I was able to stop the behaviour within a matter of a week Smile

I agree with Shirin's advice on this one. Also, when she screams, make sure you don't run to her everytime. Let her know that screaming doesn't get her anywhere or that can become a new problem to break. BTW, welcome to the forum Very Happy
