Bunny is acting weird  Reply with quote

Recently I've been having the best time with Bunny. He's been SUPER affectionate and very playful. He's been letting me cuddle with him so much more, and he's been preening me everyday which is like the sweetest thing ever. Today however we had a bad day. I was out all day becaue I had a lot of errands to run, and in the evening we were invited to my friends house for dinner, and didn't get home unti 10 pm. When I got home of course I let Bunny out, and decided to let him stay up a bit later than usual so we could spend some time together. When I went to change the papers in his cage I noticed 6-7 feathers at the bottom of the cage Sad and later when he was on his play gym, I noticed a feather in his foot and he was chewing it, and I looked down and there was more feathers on the floor Crying or Very sad I feel so awful for having left him alone all day now... I didn't realize one day would affect him so tremendously.. I really hope he doesn't get into the habbit of plucking Rolling Eyes he's been so happy the past few weeks, I hate to see him like this... anyway, I'm feeling really deppressed and scared right now..need some moral support Crying or Very sad

Hi Shirin
this may sound kinda insensitive, but I was wondering are you 100% sure that he's plucking and not just molting??? Birds do like to play with the 'molted' feathers... Apollo would play with his for a long time before he give it up.

I am hoping that bunny isn't plucking but is molting... fingers crossed...

Sad Well he just went through a molt, he has tons of new feathers around his neck.. this was him pulling out the feathers, because the ends of the feathers wear all chewed up and I saw him playing with a couple of the feathers he had plucked. He was'nt acting like himself at all last night. When I put him in his cage for bed time, my boyfriend came over to help me put the cover on and Bunny got all poofy, like when they do when they're getting territorial, and he was looking at my boyfriend like he wanted to lunge at him, and I put my fingers through the bars to calm him down, and he bit me really hard Crying or Very sad He's never bit me like that. I know the bite wasn't meant for me, and he was really aiming it at my boyfriend, but still I was so heart broken. He's never liked my boyfriend, but so far he's tolerated him. But last night it was almost like maybe he was angry at him for taking me away from him all day or something. Sad My poor little guy, I'm cancelling everything I had for today and spending all day with him.

Aaawwww (((((Shirin))))), my heart goes out Crying or Very sad It sounds to me that he's a bit ticked off at someone for you being gone all day. A monkey wrench was put into his daily routine. You know how birds are set on routines. He'll get over it I'm sure. Just give him lots of love and attention. Was there blood in the tip of his feather? I've heard that this is a sign of plucking. If no blood, then mayby his molt just paused for a while and wasn't completely over.

Keep us posted

Sad there's no blood, but I just saw him with another feather in his foot. And they've all been big feathers Sad Maybe I'll take a picture and show you guys. I'm trying to act like I'm not stressed out in front of him as much as I can... but it's really hard.

Here's the feathers he's plucked , there's been more, this is just an example. I think he's taking them out of his back.

Hi Shirin,

I'm so sorry to hear that Bunny is being weird with everyone. {{{Hugs}}}

Have you been home before and after some new feathers appeared? Why I am asking is that, usually if they are plucking, they will squawk when they pull the feathers out. Chances are if he's not squawking (intermittently, for everytime he plucks one out) he's not plucking, as I am pretty sure they feel the pain when a feathers gets pulled out. and also check for any bold spot on him that's not suppose to be there. As i heard that if they pluck, they'll pick it from the same area which would create a little bald spot by now if he's plucking. Just a thought.

I'm so sorry that you have to through that with Bunny. Sad

I agree with Cheeta, bunny would be focusing on one area creating a bald spot, usually starting with the chest. Those look like molt feathers, no blood. How long has it been since his molt? Chaquita's molt has been going on for about 2 months mostly losing small feathers with the occasional back and wing feathers.

As you know, I'm only 3 months into parronting but all the research I've done was primarily on personality and I don't recall hearing how long a molt lasts. I can imagine it lasts for quite a while cuz they'd look silly if they lost all their feathers within a months time considering it takes a couple weeks for a feather to grow back.

LOL, Chaquita's mom... that molting comment is so funny!! Cracked me up real good!! LOL....
Just on the molting side of things Chaquita's mom, Apollo has been molting for the last ummm 4 months now I think, but he's definitely slowing down!!! I find less and less feathers lying around the house in the morning now... whereas before, I'd find up to like 20 feathers plus lots of little down feathers as well in a day!! That's a lot of feathers to loose in one day if you ask me!! LOL.

Shirin, I just read this..

How awful this must feel.. (((Shirin)))
Are you really sure he is plucking, not moulting? I'm not sure if it's the same with every bird, but when Zazu plucks, the feathers are not fully grown, and he screams when he plucks a feather. (That scream runs right through my heart, but I try not to pay attention)
Does Bunny scream or make a sound?
If you look at the feathers, please try to pretend you are doing something else, like cleaning the grate.. When I'd look at the plucked feathers, Zazu would only pluck more!
I remove the feathers when he's somewhere else now.. In another room..
Perhaps an idea?

The feathers being chewed up.. Perhaps it could be that he molted the feathers, then went chewing on them? I don't know?

I also read that Bunny bit you.. Sad Please Shirin, I know you feel awful, but please please don't take it too hard on yourself..
You're really a great mommy.. Think about the feeling with LooLoo.. See, you're a true mommy.. Smile

Sad Thanks everyone for the support.. Well, I never actually saw him pulling any feathers out, but I just saw the loose feather in his foot, and he was chewing it. today i saw him twice with a feather in his foot, and I was really close by, and I never heard him scream. maybe he is just molting..hopefully Crying or Very sad It's just that last night he wasn't acting like himself at all, and I knew he was upset with me. And I've never seen so much big feathers all at once. I know they're from his back, but there's no bald spot, he hasn't lost that many. Maybe in total 10 feathers. We're having a better day today. I know I'm always one to advise against taking your birds to the pet store because of posible diseases, but I wanted to buy him some toys and i didn't want to leave him alone at home, so i took him with me. he picked out his own toys Shocked over $100 worth, but I couldn't say no Laughing then when we came home we got his brother and sister, and we went and sat in the back yard. He seemed pretty content under the sun with his toys, but as soon as I turned around and then looked at him again he had a feather in his foot, but again i heard no screaming. So I'm PRAYING that he's not plucking them and its just the molting, his molting started only 1 month and half or so ago. by the way, when we were at the petstore he was trying so hard to get on the African Greys cage!!! It was so funny, and the grey in the cage was also trying to get out of his cage.. they were so drawn to each other it was cute.

Anyway, Bunny is preening himself right now, so I'm watching him... ok, I just saw a little feather come out in his beak from his chest area, but not a peep out of him, almost like it came out really easily on its own. Another one just came out from his neck area, and another from his belly..he's not screaming at all, Crying or Very sad but I still can't tell, it seems a little excessive for so much to be coming out in a matter of 2 days. They're difinitely not all from one spot.

Sorry if I'm being a bit obssessive, I'm soooo worried Crying or Very sad Thank you all for being here, I feel better talking to people who understand what I'm going through.

Shirin, sounds like molting feathers to me, if he was pulling them out you would definately know by the sight and sound of him. One time Otis was mad at me, he let me know by agressively pulling out a feather and it was a tug not a gentle falling of a feather. I am thinking maybe the stress of being home alone also might have had something to do with it, you know how sensitive those greys are! Give it a few days.....maybe when things get back to normal for him.....but I am hoping it is just a matter of molting feathers.

Just thought l would let you know when any parrots of mine Moult ,Mylo included they love to roll and chew there feather's in there beak.Looking at the pic's you sent they all have pionts on them, so they seem to be just hanging on the bird ready to fall anyway.Moulting season can bring out the evil in a bird as well for they don't understand what is going on... Confused Just thought l would mention some of my experiance with feather's and moulting. Wink

ok.. I feel a bit better, I guess it just seemed too quincidental that the one day that I left him alone he started acting this way, and all the feathers started coming out.. I hope you're all right.

Another thing that's got me worried now, is that in 2 weeks my school starts again, and our routine is totally gong to change from what it has been this summer... should I start slowly transitioning him into that routine now so that it's not such a shock once school starts?
