| Cage size for African Grey |
|
|
I know there is a cage forum, but I'm specifically interested in talking to grey owners about this. First of all, we have finally made our decision and we put a deposit on a baby Congo who is only 4 weeks old right now.
We are trying to figure out the cage size to get. All of the books I have say to get a cage that is at least 36" wide x 24" deep x 48" height - but other people I talk to say that a grey will freak out in "too big" of a cage . . .
Any comments or suggestions would be great!
Thanks,
Kierstin |

Hi Kierstin
The cage for my African Grey is that big, and he loves it! Even when he's not in it, he'll climb in to play with his toys. I really don't think it's true that Greys freak out if they're in a big cage. Maybe you're thinking about sleep time. They do tend to like to sleep in a small space. Some people use their travel carriers for this. But mine is content sleeping in his cage too. I'm actually considering buying him a Macaw size cage. Bigger is always better when it comes to cages
Congrats on your new baby! |

My gray is in a cage that my B&G was in and he loves it.I know mine loves to have enough room to climb on his robes and hung from his toys. Id have to say bigger the better too. |

I appreciate your help:) There were about 10 grey owners in the shop the other day and when I mentioned that I had read, the bigger the better - they all said "Not for A grey" - then proceded to say . . . we should know, we all own greys! . . .
I'm glad to find some other grey owners that support what I believe |

Kierstin please go with your gut and don't listen to them. Your bird should be able to flap its wings freely in its cage without being over crowded by toys. I'm finding that the cage I have is too small, even though it's the standard size for Greys, because I can only put about 2 toys in it without over crowding the cage. I bet these people just didn't want to fork out the money for a bigger cage. |

This is my Grey's cage by the way, as you can see most of the toys are outside

I have Samson in the largest size California cage, he loves it...has all his toys and stuff in it, on it, around it....he loves to swing in it and such...Otis is in a little bit smaller one than Sam's and he loves it too, actually he loves it too much as he rarely likes to come out! I agree with the folks that say larger is better. |

Kiwi,
Congrats on the new baby - You will have to post photos when he gets home.
I would agree with everyone else - especially Shirin (she has a grey)...
I have a Pionus and he has a big cage.... and he is alot smaller than a Grey.
Good luck with your choice... But I would say bigger is better...
