calcuim deficient  Reply with quote

I took my girl to the avian vet because she just wasn't herself. The day before she had a visit to our local pet store for a wing/nail/beak clipping. The next morning she was quiet and not eating. After many extensive and expensive tests, I was told she was slightly calcium deficient and upset. I know give her a small amount of unpasturized apple vinegar in her water and calcuim drops. The Vet said to expose her to uva/uvb light daily for proper calcuim absorbtion. She has plenty of calcium in her diet, broccoli, harrisons pellets etc. She has a huge variety of fruits and veggies. He suggested a uva/uvb light for a little while every day.
Any other suggestions?

I would give it a bit of time on the calcium drops and the light first as I am sure it might take a while for them to take effect. I am sure I suffer from S.A.D myself and so got a full spectrum light for Pico and then one for my CAG just to be sure. I can't bear to be without sunshine and figured that this would be the case for my birds too. It is too cold in winter to take them outside and I know that sunlight through a window does not have the same effect. The bulbs do need changing once a year though as I think the effect can wear out after time. It has something to do with the way food is metabolised I think hence the deficiency. I hope things get better soon. PS. I also read that almonds are a good source of calcium.

How long has it been since the vet visit? And is she still quiet & inactive?
My macaw is always abnormally quiet & rather inactive for a couple days or so having had his wings or nails cut.

I've never used any special lighting for my birds, so I can't add anything more tha joti has said.

Just a word of caution with the almonds, I have heard they contain small amts of cyanide (just like apple seeds), so you don't want to give your birds too many.

EEK! Thanks for that Cathy. I do only give them one a week though if that. It is a bit of a mine field though isn't it! Shocked

Yeah, I know, it seems that if we don't have to worry about one thing, it's another Rolling Eyes
Well, it's just something I've read & I don't know what might be considered "too many", but something to keep in mind & maybe check into further.

broccoli is loaded with calcium. Evie loves milk especially in cereal. The vet said to be wary of too much dairy. She bounds across the kitchen table when the kids are having their morning breakfast cereal. spoiled bird. Her hatch date was this past Sunday. She still hasn't started talking to much. Just a word or two.
