Dietary requirements  Reply with quote

I was curious what percent protein and fat should an adult grey's diet consist of. On the harrison's food it says that the high potency diet should be used for greys. Its protein is 18% and its fat is 15%. On the other hand, hagen recommends the lifetime maintenance which is 14% protein and 9% fat. Which one is closer to the nutritional requirements of adult greys?

I don't know about specific numbers, but my Grey used to be on Hagen's Tropican, and her feathers were dull in colour and she also used to chew her tail feathers. Once I switched her over to Harrison's high potency, I noticed a dramatic difference in her feather colour and quality, and she also stopped chewing her feathers.

I don't know.. But I've heard from various African grey owners that their greys are in excellent condition on the HPC. (So said their avian vet)

Yep, my vet says the same thing everytime he sees Bunny. And he doesn't sell Harrison's at his office, he sells Hagen, so he's not profitting by recomending it to me Smile

Sounds like it must be good then. My grey hasn't had her first full molt yet so it will be nice to see if her feathers come in prettier. Right now I am giving her two separate bowls; one with harrisons and the other with hagen. Shirin, which food did you find Bunny likes better? Also which vet do you go to? I was thinking of switching vets. Do you know any good ones in the Mississauga/Toronto area?

I think she liked both, but she took to Harrison's right away, I didn't have a hard time converting her at all.

Yes, I love my vet! His name is Dr. Evan Mavromatis and he works at The Links Road Animal & Bird Clinic. He is so wonderful and knowledgeable. I recently almost lost one of birds to a serious injury and he took very good care of her and did everything possible to make her recover. I highly recomend him Smile

I've seen the other 2 vets that work at that clinic also, Dr. Axelson is also very good, but I didn't like Dr. Nur too much.
