| Do you give your grey palm nuts? |
|
|
Palm nuts are suggested as a good idea for greys in a parrot catalogue I have and as I havn't heard about them any where else I wondered if any of you give your birds them. Thanks. |

Well I know Sue's fids all get palm nuts, but I've never actually seen a palm nut, I don't know what the look like, so I've never bought them for my birds. But I also have heard that they're very nutritious. |

Gosh that was a quick reply, thanks shirrin. What time is it in Canada? It is 23.30 here. I did get some palm nuts ages ago when I first had Pico, I got some free with a food order. They are quite large and sticky a bit like a sticky chestnut. Pico didn't seem to like them and apparently they have to be stored frozen which I didn't realise and the whole lot went mouldy in just a few days! |

It's 6:30 pm here I'm supposed to be studying, but feeling bored so distracting myself with Fluffies
So, are the palm nuts in a shell when you buy them? Did you try it yourself? Does it taste good? |

Fluffies is so great for that distraction technique, I know it well. I'm in bed and so pleased it's Friday and can spend more time with my birds tomorrow. I didn't really check the palm nuts out as they went off so quickly but I will get some and try one (keeping them frozen this time). Apparently you defrost one or two and then rinse them before giving them to your bird. They didn't seem that hard, like in a shell. |

I've never tried the palm nuts. I did give Smokey some palm oil once. She did not seem to care for it and it made a terrible red mess of her face, perches, etc. when she tried to pick around it in her food dish.

Ehm, I don't know if it's shell, I suppose not..
I tried them myself, well, I licked my fingers but they didn't taste well. They tasted kind of sweet?? (Not sugar-kind-of-sweet) |

H'mm, interesting. I don't think I can find them here though I tried searching for a site where I can order them from and didn't find one. |

LOL. I ordered some yesterday and ended up spending a small fortune on other things so my £4.00 palm nuts have cost nearly £100! I really should find a way of avoiding internet shopping (totally lacking in self discipline obviously). The irony will then be that neither of them eat the darn things. They will have lots of other goodies though I guess!!!!!! I will keep you posted. |
