Dozy's Diet  Reply with quote

Hello Everyone. It's been a while since my last post.

I have been trying to incorporate pellets into Dozy's diet. I have tried all kinds of tricks but she just refuses to eat them. I've tried numerous brands, I've tried the conversion method where you reduce the normal diet and increase the pellets over a ten day period, I have soaked them in apple juice but she refuses to eat them. I have even tried grinding the pellets up into a powder and sprinkling them on her food but she knows they are pellets. I'm ready to pull my hear out!!!

I work full time. This is her current diet:

In the morning before I go to work and at night before she goes to sleep I make sure she has lots of dry food to eat - dried veges/fruits, variety of nuts (just a few) almonds, walnut, pecans, pumpin, peanuts, nutriberries, cereal and pasta. this bowl is in her cage until I come home in the evening. When I get home I'll give her some sprouts and make her a warm meal of maybe Beak Appetit (any ideas how I can get her to like this better), oatmeal cereal, cream of wheat, rice or pasta with veges). When I get home she is very excited to see me and is not interested in eating. It doesn't help that she is not a big vegie/fruit eater and I'm worried that she is not getting enough to eat in the evenings and not getting the proper nutrients that she needs. She weighs between 290g-298g.

Is she getting enough from the dried foods that I listed above? Is there something I can do to get her to eat better in the evenings? I have tried taking her dry food away about 3:00pm hoping that by 6:00pm she would be good and hungry and eat anything I put in front of her. She may take a bit or two of things I offer and that's it.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Hi wordybirdy,

I friend of mine got her cockatoo to eat pellets by example. She sat down by her bird and showed him how you eat a pellet. It took some time but then he imitated her and eat the pellet. Very Happy And he loved it Laughing

Hi Birddaddy! I did the same thing with Dozy. I sat down at the table and placed her pellets on a plate in front of me pretending to eat and making all kinds of MMMmmmmm noises hoping she would eat some. She would pick them up in her beak but would drop or fling them. I even ate a couple of pellets thinking this would work for sure but it didn'tSad
Thanks for your reply.

Hi wordybirdy,

It was worth a try. A pity that it did not work. Confused

I hope he wasn't playing a game with you. Evil or Very Mad

I would give it some more tries. Maybe your parrot needs some more convincing. Shocked

That's a good idea! Do you happen to have the name of the mix from Harrison? Thanks worth a try.

I did not know that Harrison sells pellets that looks like sunflower seeds.

Hoi Wordybirdy,

Did you found the name of those pellets?

I haven't heard of these pellets. Harrisons pellets CONTAIN sunflower seeds if I'm correct.
Or do you mean the smaller pellets? (Fine instead of coarse)
