Hi All,
Do birds in general look for escape routes? If someone walks in the door and the door is open only long enough for the person to get in, will a bird bolt out the door in that split second? Or, is it a combination of something frightening them and a door or window being left open that they escape?
My tiel is now flighted. It "seems" she would much rather be on me than anywhere else. She is always following me around. I wouldn't do anything careless like answer the door with her on my shoulder or leave a window open so that she could escape. Are they watching and timing the exact moment when they think they might be able to escape? Can my family come in or go out (quickly and if the birds are now where near the door) without me getting stressed out. If they are content with their flock (human flock) will they try to escape?
Thanks everyone. |

I don't think you need to worry As long as you take precautions and not leave windows and doors wide open when your bird is out flying about. |

All my birds are flighted as well. The door to the kitchen is often open, they only go through when they hear me going into the kitchen. Because they know that their food is coming from there.
I do walk in and out, as do some family members. In general I do not see any reaction from my parrots or budgies. But as you say be careful, with flighted birds there is always a risk that they scare from something OR that someone leaves the door open for just a second too long.
But as others said don't leave doors or windows open and it will be alright. But please do check that your tiel does not sit close to the doors. IF someone would come in, she might scare and fly past the person that is coming in. |
