Hi from Los Angeles  Reply with quote

Hello All: Ruby (8-yr-old-gray) and I are new to the site. Love the movies! Ruby is sitting on my arm as I type and, although she's not too fond of the computer, after all, it does take my attention away from her, she knows this is a good cause.

She's had some heavy breathing problems lately. Took her to the vet who gave her some antibiotics, and thinks it is just bacterial, but the heavy breathing continues. She sounds like she stuffed up.

Anyone else have this problem?

Smile Hi there! Welcome to fluffies! I can't let my Grey near the computer because she would immediately go for the keyboard keys Laughing

Sad I'm sorry to hear about the breathing problem, I hope the antibiotics help, and Ruby gets all better. I haven't had a similar experience, so I can't give any advice.

Welcome venicebeachskater!! Long name, can we call you venice? Anyway, what is the temp in that area? is it warm enough that you need to run the AC? Make sure you keep Ruby away from vents or drafts. Having a constant air supply blowing on them isn't safe. They can catch colds or develpe pnemonia. You may want to consider getting a UV light or maybe add some humidity (if it's dry in your home) to help with the healing process. Perhaps add some multivitamin to her food as well. Talk to your vet and see if any of these things will contribute to her getting well. Good luck and hope Ruby feels better soon. Let us know.

Hi

Did you take Ruby to an avian vet or a regular vet?

How long has she been on the antibiotic therapy?

Welcome to fluffies!

Thank you all for your comments. I just yelled out to Ruby that we got email and she blew everyone a big kiss.

I do take her to an avian vet, Frank LaVac in Santa Monica. It's also where I had her chipped. She was on antibiotics for about 15 days, and boy, you try to put a syringe of yucky tasting medicine down a gray's gullet!

Although we usually have great weather, it has been cold this month. And although she's not in a draft, I think I actually remember her getting a little wheezy the same time last year, and then it went away. She is getting a little better now. Still breathes a little heavy sometimes, but at others I don't hear it at all. She still eats and sleeps and looks okay.

My fear is aspergillosis (sp?) which is a guess this hard-to-cure fungal infection they get from breathing in mold spores.

Maybe I will try a heat lamp though. She (and the cats) both seem to love hanging out right under a nice warm light, like my reading light in bed.

I love the photos of all your birds. I'll post Ruby's just as soon as I get a digital camera, and learn how to work it, and learn how to download, etc.

Well, give Ruby a big KISS right back Very Happy

I'm glad to hear it sounds like she's getting better! Did the A. vet do a test for asper g? You know, I wonder if it's something in the vent system when, & IF, you turn on your heat.

Hi there!

WElcome to you and Ruby!
Can I ask if you went to an avian vet? Going to a normal vet or avian one can make quite a difference. Most vets aren't knowledgeable when it comes to birds..

I'm a bit behind, sorry I asked about the avian vet. I just read that you took her to the avian vet!

Looking forward seeing photos of Ruby!
