More questions Re Sennie and getting new grey. Help please!!  Reply with quote

Thanks for all your previous advice. Have taken on board the nuetral territory, actually did take Pico in to see him today as we make frequent visits back to where I got Pico from. Neither of them batted an eyelid so that was a good sign. However, very different if in Pico's house I guess. My question is that whether I should put the new grey in my bedroom for a while, Pico rarely goes in there so is not really his territory. But what worries me about doing this would be that a) new birdie would not be around us so much and then b) wouldn't it upset new birdie if I then moved him and his cage downstairs? I would get him a stand so he could come downstairs gradually perhaps. Also, newbie is very young, only ten weeks and so no question of getting his wings clipped for a while, could I risk having them both out in the same room, Pico is clipped. Sorry for so many questions but it is such a big decision. Do any of you worry about your bird outliving you as well? I wonder if it is fair to buy a bird with such a long lifespan too. Thanks folks-CAG is as lovely as ever, such a cut above the other two they have otherwise this decision would be so much easier.

I personally have found that a birds terrorty is usully his cage. We have never had any problems interducing a new bird into the flock. This does not mean it was an over night process. Place both of the cages in the same room. You have already broken the quarratin, so in my mind theere is no justifcation in keeping them in different rooms. The Grey will accept just about anything at this point in her life. But Pico is accoustom to being top dog in that house. So you need to treat him like he is. First one out of the cage and last one in the cage. First to get food ect and so forth... Always Remember, Pico is top dog. After about a couple of weeks of this move thier cages together, not close enough where they can get each other but where they can see each other. As thier relationship develops they will sort things out for then selfs. I would not be surprise if it takes up to a year, a CAG develops slower then a Seni. Always keep in mind that a CAG can accedently, while playing take a foot off or break a wing of a seni. A young CAG will eventualy go through a phase where she will start to test the power of her beack. Don't let this scare you off, you just need to be watchfull. A CAG is a wonderful bird and our two have worked out to be excellent flock members, they get along great with the others great, a little pushie at times.

You do have to plan for the birds to out live you. We have our birds in our will. You need to talk to a professional about this, I can not help you beyond this.

To clip or not to clip.... On a Grey I would not clip until he is comfertable flying. You will have a much heathier bird, with more confidence. And the feathers will always grow back....

Hello

i'm new here and i'm a little bit shocked. why do cou clipp your parrots? they are birds and birds must fly. here in germany its illegal to clip the wings. have you ever think about a second senegal for your pico? a senegal and a grey parrot are absolutly diffrent, they can't understand each other. both of them need a partner.

sorry for my bad english, i hope you would understand me.

I understand your concern regarding clipping but it has proven to be far safer for me and my bird. Pico was unclipped for six months and he flew into a mirror and window, in the wild there are no windows. In addition to this it was restricting the amount of time I could let him out as he simply would not stay put and had a few narrow escapes while I was cooking, he also very nearley escaped when my son came in the house. It has been a lot of hard work handling him and getting to the point I am at now, while he was flying he was less friendly and did exactly what he wanted, he can still fly a little as he is not harshley clipped. I also have my door and windows open in the summer. I can interact with him far more now and he seems a lot happier as a result because I can do more with him. He would be terrified if he escaped, the philosophical question is that they were meant to fly, but that is in the wild, he is not in the wild. The deeper argument then is should we keep birds at all because it is not natural to keep them in a cage or a house. Yes, I have asked myself that question and I suppose any bird owner is being selfish if you want to look at it that way. The reason I don't want another sennie is because I don't want to breed them and no guarantee that the two males wouldn't be rivals either. I have learnt a lot from Pico and feel far more confident of larger bird, the fact that a grey and sennie are very different is exactly why I made that choice. Pico has to share me with other people, my dog and my son. I have time for them all and treat them all in the way that suits them best. Lots of people have more than one bird with no ill effects. If I felt either bird would suffer I would take the necessary action. Sorry it is so long but I did want you to know that I think carefully about what I do especially when it involves any kind of creature.
