New CAG Diet  Reply with quote

I have a six month old CAG that I just got on Dec 17. I need some advise as to whether I am feeding him right. He gets a variety of fruits and vegetbles every day. Along with that he gets a piece of birdy bread that I make. Its a different kind everyday. Like one day its banana, the next it might be a vegetable bread, then he might get a pumpkin raisin bread. I have alot of different kinds that I have made. About twice a week he also gets a bean, rice and pasta mix that I made. He doesn't eat seed at all. He just doesn't like it. I have a hard time getting him to eat any kind of nuts. Sometimes I sprinkle almond slivers in his food. He won't eat sunflower seeds at all. I have tried treating him with them he just spits them out. They are unsalted and not in the shell. I haven't gotten any pellets yet as I can't find them in the pet stores here, I have to order them online. But I expect he probably won't like them either and I will have to crush them and put them in his bread or something. Does his diet sound ok? anything that I am missing? or maybe doing too much of?

Yeah he's a great bird. I agree about the pellets. I just worry alot about his diet, cause I believe he has to be healthy to be happy and well adjusted. If he won't eat them, crushing them and putting them in other food is ok?

I think so...
I'm in no way an expert...but I'm sure if he doesn't take to them imediately...
crushing them and doing that will get them in his system...so he gets those extra nutrients he needs.....
then he'll start to eat just the pellets...
it's good that he's young, because the younger they are...I think they more willingly they will put things in their mouths.....to at least try them.

Hi, Congreats on the New CAG and Welcome to Fluffies,

At six months he is not quite sure what to eat. He depends on you to teach him. You have a great start. Sunfollower seed are not the best thing in the world to give, so it is better off not developing a teast for them Cody our 5 year old CAG does not like them either.

Do get some pettels though, keep a bowl of them in his cage all the time. Monitor his weight at lest once a week. You may have to use a trick or two to get him to start eating pettels.

Also try sharing one meal a day with him, that is the way they learn what to eat in the wild, is by watching what everybody else eats in the flock, so dinner is a big social affair. It is a good bonding excurise as well.

Thanks Lynzi. I will start trying pellets with him. He does at least try just about everything I give him, so hopefully I can get the pellets in him too without too much problems.

Thanks John. I haven't tried shareing a meal with him yet, but have been thinking about doing just that. I have a cockatiel too that loves to come out at dinner time if we are haveing some of his favorite food.

Yeah I am not too upset that he doesn't like sunflower seeds, or his parrot seed either for that matter. I know neither is real good for him.

What is the average wieght for a CAG? Oh just so many things I don't know. And I thought I did a lot of research before I got him.

The Average weight, make no difference.... It is your CAG's weight that matters. Go down to Walmart and get a kitchen scale that you can weigh things in grams.. Then watch his weight, it will drop alot when he gets sick or there is something wrong. Amy our Red Loard went from 515 down to 480 it seemed over night and so we took her into to the Vet at that point.

Misty weight is about 430 and Cody's is just a little bit under her..
