Does anyone have some advise on how to stop your grey from nipping before it turns into bitting? Mine is 5mo old and bit me in the face for the first time. I want to do what I can to make sure he doesn't turn into a bitter! He could do some serious damage if he wanted to! But you can't hardly spank a bird! Help! |

at the moment he starts to nip, say firmly NO. and distract him with something to call his attention to something else. if he keeps on nipping, punish him by putting him back into his cage and ignore him for 5 minutes. don't evenlook at him. after 5 minutes you can take him again.
if he starts again, repeat the punnishment.
he will learn quick, but you have to be firm. |

Hi! Thank you for the advice,I know you told me you can't handel your grey. And each bird type is diffrent, but I was wondering if you know... For the greys, what is the best age for training? I heard at a very younge age, but mine doesn't want to listen. He won't coaperate in anyway. Is it too early to start? Maybe he's to younge? Any advice? |

you can start as soon as you like. you can train him to trust you by starting to offer treats through the cage bars. as soon as he takes them from your hand you can try offering him something with your hand in the cage etc. then try to make him step up your hand or stick.
this is already training.
he will get used to you soon.
mine is difficult as it was very traumatized, but i am allowed to offer some treats, which she does take from my hand or drink from my glass.
so give it a try and be very pacient. it will take time and a lot of love |

Hi! Thanks for your responce! He trusts me quite a bit. He just won't coperate when I try to train him. He has step up, and step down good. But anything else he just won't.so I guess I was just wondering if maybe he is too younge? At what age is good to start? If you know, and maybe he is going threw his naughty/nipping stage? Do you by chance know when they do that? Again I know each bird is a individule. I just thought you might know cause you have so many birds. And thank you for being so helpful! I know I have a lot of questions. |

it is always good to ask. don't worry.
i guess that you have to make the training exiting. give him a treat when he does something well. praise hi m a lot. he is not to young, but he wants to explore and do many things. it is very normal.
when you train with him, don't do it too long. 5 mintues, several times per day. also give him a time out to play and do crazy things. he will like that as well. just be pacient. it will work in time.
as he is so young he has to try everything with his beak. it is very normal that he nips a bit. you can always say firmly NO when he bites a little. like that he learns inmediately. once he knows what is ok and what not he will stop with it. he is only exploring. |
