| oh I feel so awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
|
|
I feel terrible!!
Oskar had a bad experience at the vet's office, and now he can't fly...and he seems so miserable now!!
he wants so badly just to fly to my bed to cuddle with me...but he can't...cuz I had his wings clipped!!!!
NEVER AGAIN!!!!
the other boys are just fine with it, cuz they didn't like to really fly anyways...
but my poor baby boy Oskar!!!!!!
I feel so horrible about it!
so I'm gonna let them grow back and build an outdoor aviary for during the summer, so he can really stretch those big beautiful wings!!!!
I didn't think it would be so hard on him....
but now I think how I would feel if someone cut of my legs...........I'd be so upset!! he's not mad at me.....he just seems so sad.
what can I do to make him feel happy until his wings grow back? |

I know how you feel. When we had Anne's wings clipped she was so sad and depressed. We just gave her a lot of love and I gave her an occasional hand feeding. Seemed to sooth her. Although Anne can't fly she can still fly up to the bed and across about a 3 foot span to manuver in the bird room. Misty our cag is now flying and I would really hate to clip her as she has become such a confident little girl. Give him lots of love Lynzi and he will come around. The good thing is they will grow back!!! |

Yep, all my birds used to go through a depression too immediately after being clipped, and it would last for days. Never again! |

You know, honestly, in my opinion, clipping a birds wings is not even close to being comparable to cutting off a persons legs. People used to really hit me with that argument & I hated it when they did!
Manu used to seem quite depressed for 2 or 3 days after having his wings clipped too. I no longer get his wings clipped, however he still acts a bit quiet & inactive even after trimming his nails, I think he just feels a bit "wierd" afterward. |

My budgies especially my Figaro, would be depressed, as fig has only been trimmed once or twice.
I agree with Cathy. Birds can still walk with clipped wings, a legless person would be able to use a wheelchair, and wing feathers grow back.
Hope Oskar gets over it soon.

ya....losing ones legs would be a bit worse......I think I meant it in the sense of losing his main choice for mobility...like maybe having to walk 30 miles because someone stole your car?
he's a little back to normal, he's just having a hard time adjusting his wings back after he flaps them around a bit.....they just kind of hang at his side for a little bit....then he figures it out....maybe his wings are sore from how the vet held him??
I know mine would be.... |

I doubt that he's actually feeling sore, but I'm sure that he is feeling different by all means. I can imagine that having their flight taken from them, especially for the first time, they must feel very defenseless.
I'm sure it will just take him a bit of time to realize that he's OK.
I'm sorr it wasn't a "pleasant" vet visit for Oskar |

Seems there are many opinions on the subject. I clip Jonah's (CAG) wings because otherwise he flies into walls and everything else for that matter. We live in an apartment and there's not much room for flying. However, I let them grow long enough for him to gain confidence through flight, and when I trim them he can still fly a little bit and get where he needs to go. If he is depressed at all afterward (maybe for one day) it is probably due to the actually act of getting clipped and getting his nails trimmed. These are certainly not his favorite activities!! |

I have to clip my Conure and Cockatiel's wings, because Sonnie (the Conure) flies into walls....and Qwill (the 'Tiel) flies into windows and mirrors......so it's best for them to be clipped.....but Oskar didn't really fly into anything....so I'll let him grow out. |

Misty our CAG just seem to change over night when she realized what she could do for the first time. This is strickly an induvial thing and some of our birds get clipped and some of them don't each case is judged independently. Right now we have 7 birds that fly and the rest are clipped. If I could they would all fly and I strongly recommand to fly your birds, if you can at all. Out of 19 birds we only have 7 that fly, so we to have issues with our birds.

Oskar loved flying...he did it every day just over to my bed, but that seemed to keep him content....now he tries and can almost make it over there...but falls short about a foot....
I'm going to let him grow out, but for the little boys' saftey...they will be clipped......
we have way too many corners in our house to run into....and believe me...they sure run into them! haha |

Cody my CAG, Had his wings so messed up becuase of the previous owners did not know what they were doing, it just breaks my heart to watch him crash on the floor. All his primarys and some of his secondarys are gone down shaft. I hear a thud through out the house and I know it was him....He will be another year to two years before he will have wings again to even think about flying...

Lynzi, I think it also depends on your attitude towards Oskar. Can you take him on trips with you through the house? Most likely he'll forget about his inability to fly..
My birds don't seem to mind their clipped wings. (Though I find Wheezy a bit of a border case. I think he'll do well with his wings?? I'm also thinking about freeflight in the far far future with him) |
