How much time a day does a grey need? I know with meyers parrots the store told me 2 hours a day at least, after that they'll probably want back in their cage because they like to be alone as much as with their people. |

The more time you spend with your birds the more tame they will be. Right now my Grey is out of his cage 6-10 hours a day, I take him around the house with me when I'm doing chores. One on one playing with him is probably 1 hour a day, he's not very needy and doesn't need to be on top of me all the time, and is just as content playing with his toys on his play gym. During the school year he's out of his cage 5-6 hours a day. |

You're right to have that concern. Your bird should learn early on to not be totally dependant on you and be able to entertain itself with toys when you aren't at home. When you're going to go back to work, transition your bird slowly to spend more time in his cage. For example everyday cut his out of cage time by one hour, so that when you do go back to work it's not such a huge shock. |

If I took my bird out of it's cage ten hours a day for 5 years and I went back to work then could I still cut the hours down to 2 or is that cruel? |

no but I know I won't be home ten hours, if and when I go back to work I'll be gone 8 or 10 hours a day, and if the bird is used to ten hour days how do I get it used to less hours (I used 2 as an example) |

Like I said, just get them used to it gradually before you actually go back to work They should be ok. My summer vacation is over in 2 weeks, so I'm going to be out of the house for about 8 hours a day.. I'll let you know how it goes over with my Grey |

Hey Lisa
I have just moved your questioned into the African Grey forum regarding the amount of time out of cage.
I think it's important that birds are not trained to on scheduled. It's important that they are flexible with the amount of time that they get to come out to their humans. Apollo doesn't have a set amount of hours he's out. I can be home all day and sometime I let him out the whole entire day, but sometimes he spends more hours in his day cage then out of cage even when I'm home all day. I do this on purpose so he doesn't expect it to happen. He doesn't know what to expect therefore aren't stressed over the out of cage time. I hope I'm making sense. It is important that they learn to play by themselves in their own cage. Apollo is getting there!! LOL.
As with your question regarding the toilet tissue rolls... I wouldn't recommend using the toilet paper as some can be very fine and if swallowed, it could end up lining the bird's crop and sufficating the bird or infecting the crop. On top of that, the scented toilet rolls are definitely a no no for birds, so please don't give those to your bird, not even the left over roll in the middle. It can be toxic to your bird. and also the glue that they use to glue the cardboard roll in the middle may be toxic to bird as well. Just a few reasons not to give them to your birds.
Take care
Bih |
