Hi all,
I had a very BIG surprise a day or two ago I wanted to try and get F to step onto my hand and tried the trick in the bathroom because they cant claw into the carpet. I also remebered that some people said their CAG's liked to shower so I wanted to shower in any case and got in leaving the door open. before I knew it she was of the perch and in the shower on the floor walking around in the water......
It was so cool........any tips on this I just left her to cary on and dry by herself.... I also did not use any soap while she was in the shower ...
Cheers |

Oh you are so lucky that your grey likes to shower My Grey HATES it! Drenching showers are really important for Greys though, as they come from the rainforest If you can, try to shower her daily, this also reduces the dust on her feathers. There's no need to use shampoo, as long as she gets wet. The only thing is, make sure you shower her in the morning, so that she has all day to dry off. Never shower at night, because if she goes to sleep wet, then she could get sick. |

Hi Herbert..
This is so great to hear, I can't believe this! What a hit..
I would suggest to let her dry naturally.. I think most greys won't get soaked? The water just doesn't seem to get into their feathers.. |

Sue you're right about that. You know I have such a hard time showering Bunny in the first place, and then when I do get her in the shower, all the water just rolls off her back like a duck I have to keep her under water for a while, before she actually gets wet |

Percy my tiel is like that. I can spray him for 10 mins and he still doesn't get very wet. Even if he fans his beautiful wings out and flaps around. But his new buddy Winnie (another tiel) gets soaked? So I don't know how that works |

my CAG, sake, loves his showers, to the point that when i miss a day, he will head along the floor into the bathroom first chance he gets. he then gives me the look like well? it is time for my shower now! in the shower, he sits on a shower perch (holds to wall of shower by suction cups, made for large birds so no worries about it coming down) until i am finished, then i cool the water a bit from the temperature i prefer and sake steps up onto my arm and i put him under the water (sharing it with him). he isn't like macaws and cockatoos that i have known, who would get all excited and flap their wings - sake gets quiet, leans up against me, and literally closes his eyes. if i shorten the time too much, he will only very reluctantly step down off my arm back onto the perch, very clearly asking for more time under the water (which he will get unless i am really in a rush). i rotate him under the nozzle. he likes the water to be drenching, not misting, interestingly enough. sometimes he will put out his tongue to catch drops. he likes his head wetted but i don't let the water spray directly into his eyes or ears - side drops that hit in those areas from off of me or him he doesn't mind and will simply shake off.
i shower him almost every day. i've found that daily for too many days in a row is too much - his skin gets too dry and itchy. but 5/7 days seems to be about right. never use soap or any other product made for humans or other species! the only thing you can spray your bird with is a dilute mixture of aloe penetrans (get from a vet). i read somewhere (don't remember where unfortunately) recently that showering too often is not good, as i have discovered with sake, although sake seems to need showers more often than the author of the article advocated.
it is a wonderful bonding experience, too.
cheers

Oh Dim!
Congrats one more time for Tomorrow!! How cool.
Sake sounds like a really cool bird under the shower. Apollo doens't want it everyday, he'll ask for it ever second or third day... So that's good for me. He isn't too dusty, so that works out great for me too. |

thanks so much, to all, for the congrats. i can't quite believe it yet, maybe tomorrow i will...
i'm really glad sake likes showering too, 'cause he doesn't liked to be sprayed with a water bottle, and greys NEED their showers.

SHirin, does she get wet at all? Or would you need special shampoo? |

Well... after a while she kinda gets wet. But I wouldn't say soaked. There's NO WAY she would let me put any kind of shampoo on her. She would probably bite me. I've had no luck in trying to get her to like showers |
