I have 1 yr old african, his name is travis, he is very tame, except, i can not get him to step up and stay on my hand from his cage, he will from the floor but as asoon as he see's something he can hang on to he jumps of my hand.

I have tried treats, bribery, corruption, i seem to be constantly failing. Anyone have any advice, pls?

I cant even get him out of the cage, he will only come out of his own free will and then tends to run around the top of his cage rather than step up

Hmmm, perhaps he hasn't mastered the skill of stepping up very well yet? Can you take him to another room on a T-stand? Are you familiar with clickertraining? Is there something he absolutely loves to eat?

What is a good treat to use for the clicker training? A break from the usual that won't harm him?

I hope I can help a little.

First thing to do is to find a treat that he will always take from your hand.

Then break the treat into small bite size bits, when you give him a treat it should only take but a second to eat.

Then that treat only comes from you, no where else can he get the treat...

The rule is, he does not get out of his cage except on your hand. Period end of story....

Start out with targgeting (sp). always give him a treat from the same hand. make sure he knows that hand has a treat, get him to follow that hand, back and forth accross the perch, always giveing him a treat and saying "good", use just a single word, the same word when he does something right. This is important because when you use that word he will learn that a treat is close behind. This is called a bridge.

after he has mastered targgeting. Then place your free hand in front of him and show him the treat as though you are targgeting and use "Up" or "Step up" as a cue. Don't force him on your free hand now, but start working him toward your free hand, by using the targgeting technic he has already learned, then when he does step on your arm, give him extra treats and tell him what a good boy he is. Don't forget the bridge.

After he is steping up. Then ask him if he wants out, This is another cue, so it is important that you use the same phrase. "Out" or "(birds Name) Out" any simple phrase. Then follow the same techinc you used in "Step Up". Except that you bring him out and allow him to get off on top of his cage. Then you have him step up and place him back in his cage.

To get him to this point will take a few days, it could take even a week or to. But always keep each training session short no more then 10 mins and try about three times a day. make sure you do this before he eats. if you have to take his food away from him an hour or two before the training this won't hurt him at all.

I am now on day 3 of the training and getting no where fast Sad I take his food away for 1 - 2 hours before the session, i have tried 3 of his favourites as treats, he just throws them to the floor, he instead puts his head under my hand for a pet, i have refrained from petting him and after 5 minutes of this behaviour i move away from his cage to show him his behaviour is wrong, i am beggining to think it is a bad idea.

Don't give up on him. You need to find a treat frist, then he will become trainable very quickly. the grey is very intellgent and will learn very quickly after he figures out what you want...

What treats have you tried?

Dried fruit, nuts, Fresh runner beans, sugar snaps. I really don't know what else to try as a treat that won't be harmful to him

get some raw unsalted shelled sunfollower seeds, cut them in half. Try them, this is like candy to them. DO NOT put it in thier food. This is only to be given to him as a speical treat, and he only get it from your hand.

As a regular diet, sunfollower seeds are not good, because like candy they contain nothing nurtional for a bird and only add to the fat containt of thier diet. But as with candy and a child. If given at the approiate time and amount, you can work wonders..

Day 4 and we have a result! After 2 minutes of the treat training this morning, and asking if 'Travis wants out' Travis stepped to my hand and allowed me to bring him steadily out of the cage, he then sat on my hand for 1 minute, i placed him back, gave him more treats, then asked if he wanted out again, he sat on my hand for a further 5 minutes. He was very shaky but seemed comfortable other than that as he proceded to trying to chew my gold bracelet in half. Overall a very good result today and i don't think anything could make me smile any bigger! Thankyou so much for all the advice provided, it is greatly appreciated. I can't wait for the day that my cuddly parrot can travel around the house with me.
