Hi Guys and Gals,
I have an CAG called Fluffy, She is quite relaxed and weel behaved, If I pick her up she will sit on my hand without problems, but I cannot seem to get her to step on to my hand when I put my hand in front of her feet she wants to bite my hand and makes a grinding noise.
She is only 3 months old am I mabey to hasty ??

Welcome Herbertk!
Fluffy sounds wonderful, but sounds as though she was never taught the step up command.
I would recommend you take her out of her cage, put her on a perch in another room and then approach her VERY slowly and gently push up on the area in front of her feet and say step up! That or another trick that can work that I always suggest for a more stubborn bird/last resort is, putting them on the floor. They do not 'like' to be there if they did not 'choose' to be there, and will therefore 'gladly' step up in order to get higher up in the world. Make sure you reward her very well for stepping up - with a treat or praise or anything, so she knows she did good. The growling could mean you moved to fast, or that she just doesn't like her feet played with?? Not sure.. but be patient and go slow. Especially with CAG's.
This is what I'd do with any bird, and I don't own a CAG so there are others here that are more knowledgable about this species than me. Good Luck and Enjoy Fluffy, she sounds pretty!! Can't wait to see pictures! |

Hi HerbertK..
Nice to have you here..
I do not have a Greg - but I would suggest that you use a peice of wood first off - saying Step Up in a sing song voice...
LOL heres me giving advice when Pi won;t do it!!!..
I am sure that Shirin (who does have a grey) will correct me if I am wrong..

Hi all,
I will try this and let you know you can see a photo in my dairy... She makes the funniest noises almost like a cat spinning but almost a garling sound when I stroke her head.... and then stiks her neck out all the way down.... ( I hope this means she is enjoying it...)
She also started exploring my house flying down from the cage wlking arounfd and looking at everything then going back to her cage and climbing up again, I had some trouble getting her of the top of he cage last night when it was bed time.....
Can someone mabey explain some of the more common sounds or are they unique to every bird...

I can only go by how my gray is but my gray would freak if i used a stick or anything that he was unsure of.Grays tend to freak very easy.Be careful of how you teach the step up commandYou don't want him/her to miss trust you. What i would do is if he/she likes the cage take him/her away from the cage and have her/him step up and every time he/she steps up take her/him back to the cage and give a treat.Your gray is pretty young he/she will learn the step up command.Just don't be pushy. Allso a lot of grays do not like anything other than their heads touched. But again i'm only going by how my gray is.Good luck. |

hey herbertk
Fluffy is Beautiful!! Amazing looking bird. gotta love them. hehe
You've only had her for a few days, and she's only young like you said, give her time to settle and bond with you, she'll come around!! sounds like you're already making good progress being able to stroke her head.
Good job.
More pics please!!!
Cheers

Ha ha ha, they probably think: 'Oh no, hide!! It's her again!'
(They do tend to think that of me!) |

Herbertk,
Love the photos - you can tell that she is young from her eyes...
She looks pretty trusting to me in her photos - as she one fot tucked up....
So you know if she really is a girl - have you had her tested??
Lovely photos - keep posting em...
Cheers
