Hey everyone!
African Greys are known for their outstanding talking abilities. What are some of the funny, adorable, or just plain outrageous things your African Grey says? And at what age would you say your grey started talking?

My greys are both talkers, being males not sure if this has anything to do with it. Mine love to talk when we are on the phone....as soon as they hear the bittons being pressed they start talking.."hello" "well ok then" laughter more laughter than "ok" "bye". Sometimes when I call my daughter's name one will answer "what?" "I love you" is said quite often. I think greys start talking at about a year old. Just be sure to interact and talk alot to them, explain things to them as you would a toddler. |

My Grey is 7 months old. His first word was peek-a-boo. Now he says "hi", "hello", "good boy", "alright", and "I love you". Pretty good for a baby I would say.

Picasso's just picked up a new phrase "that will do" I say it to him when he gets over excited and goes a little too silly. Now he says it before I do. |

sake's full name is socrates and he loves to say "socratoooooooooooooo"! he says that all the time. he also spends lots of time obviously practicing lots of things we don't yet understand, including some chinese (from his previous household). he says "hello" and "Sake" and "Socrates" and "what's up?" and "how are you?" and "i love it!" and he used to call Husky by name. he says "good dog Zero" and he whistles up a storm, lots of variations, some very complicated, including singing along with me while i practice my violin (i play classical music, so he does a sort of descant to it). he has a particular whistle that shows he knows i am making him a bowl of food. he has been lately saying full sentences that we just can't quite understand. but what i like the best are the gurgles and chirps he gives when he is cuddled against me getting scritches and pets. we didn't get him for his ability to talk - that is simply a bonus. his personalty and companionship are so wonderful and unique - and we have a cat and a dogs and horses and love them all too. birds are different - one can believe they are the direct descent of dinosaurs... i love looking in his eyes. he looks right back at me, which for a prey animal is unusual. you can tell he is thinking about me just as i am thinking about him.
uh oh, you got me started... it is so easy to talk and talk about these wonderful feathered creatures!

Speaking of dinasaurs... at the moment, in Toronto, we are having this exhibit at one of the big museums called "feathered dinosaurs: The origin of flight". I went and saw it recently and it is just unbelieveable how practically identical birds and dinosaurs are! Their feet, the skeletal structure... Anyway, just fascinating! Totally agree that one descended from the other. If the exhibit comes to your town be sure to see it, it's amazing!

Dusty is hilarious. He'll be 14 years old in 3 days but I don't know when he began speaking. We're his third owners. (See post named "Dusty")
Favorite sayings: "You've got a dirty face!" "I love you" "Water" "Are you a good boy?" "What's up?" "Hi (whispers)" "Peek-a-boo" "Hello Birdie!"
(sings) "Happy Birthday" "Oh What a beaustiful morning"
He also whistles like R2D2 (Star Wars), pieces of "The Entertainer", and several others.
The funniest I find is that he imitates my husband's car alarm. I find myself laughing VERY hard! |

Simon is finally talking ! So far what I can understand is Hi Simon, come here step up a great wolf whistle, hello and a few other things that I just don't understand. I hope it isn't the piss off my husband keeps trying to teach him.
When I first told my husband and daughter that he was talked they rolled their eyes and called me crazy, but now they have heard him. |

Tia I just read your diary page I'm sorry that you had to give Otis away, it couldn't have been an easy decision, but you're so good to have the bird's best interest at heart. It's also really nice that Sam seems to be a lot happier too. Hopefully Otis will get on just fine with his new family and he'll be able to finally begin trusting and coming out of his shell. |

It was sad, I wasn't home....a chicken I am! I said my goodbye and had a lil chat with him before I left. I know that the others felt it too cuz they were all a bit quiet during the day and when I came home they were different too. Very chatty but very loving as well.....Sam did not go into the tiels area at all and that is the first place he goes to to make trouble! |

Oh Tia,
I'm so very sorry to hear that you had to give Otis away. I guess it would be best for both Sam and Otis since like you said, they were probably seeing each other as competition. I am sure that the new family will treat him well.
Take care Tia
Cheers
