| Toys for my Timneh, Taz? |
|
|
I read where greys are not real comfortable with new things added to their cages. My new grey is leary and down-right afraid of new perches and toys I want to add to his cage. When I got him last week he only had a 1" dowel for a perch (I personally pull all dowels out and replace with natural safe wood). He finally let me put the new sandy perch towards the bottom of his cage. And on the third day (today) perched on it! To ease the stress I've hung a chew toy on the outside of his cage and have seen him nibble it. I don't believe he's ever had any brances to chew on. I gave him a nice clean crabapple branch (1/2" x 3") but it spooked him and he threw it in the bottom of the cage. I assume with persistence he will eventually try these new things. This is my first bigger bird and I want to supply him with everything he needs for stimulation and bonding with us. What toys, etc. do timnehs prefer----or is it just trial and error?
By the way, it IS Tim-nu(t), right?

I think every bird is different and has its own personality.
My CAG loves new Acrylic toys and swings but hated a silver bell I bought him
He used to growl and scream at it so I hung it outside his cage for a few days and played with the bell near him when I had him and in no time he was ok with it.
My friends Grey wouldn’t accept and new yellow perch but when he changed it for a blue one he was ok with it.
Also someone else I know can’t walk past his Greys cage holding something foreign to it or it goes wild.
So I think it
will
be trial and error |

Try puting the new toy/perch in the room where his cage is for a couple of days so he can observe it. Let him see you playing with the toy and see how much fun you're having, but don't offer him the toy right away, make him think that it's such a fun toy that you won't share it with him. After a couple of days try bringing it close to his cage, and in most cases the Grey will lean towards the toy to investigate it. Like Jango said, different birds have different sensitivity levels, my Grey has never been affraid of any toys and takes to them right away... but one time I brought this pink perch home..and.. he flew away from his cage to get away from it Another thing you can try, since you have other birds, is let him see your other birds playing with the new toy, that'll usually get them jealous enough to want the toy for themselves. |

I think it's just trial and error, but you can make things easier by putting toys in the cage when he's in another room. (If possible)
My citron used to be afraid of every toy, unless I put it in her cage when she was in another room. Once in her cage, she'd start playing! |

Definately trial and error You'll catch on to what he likes. I believe timneh is pronounced tim-nee. |
