You know what? I think I say Alex on an animal planet show. They were testing him and think that he is indeed THE most intelligent bird known. This one test they had him do, he was in one room and his owner in another room. His owner had several pictures in a manila envelope that neither one of them had seen. They had a video recorder on him and on the pictures that she was looking at. They believe he is telepathic. She would look at a pic of a flower and he'd say "that's a pic of a pretty flower" "look at the pretty flower". There was another one of someone with minimal clothes on and he'd say "look at the beautiful naked body".

He had a ride in a car one time and kept telling his owner to get a car after that. She didn't have one cuz she used public transportation. He'd say "gotta get a car" "wanna ride in a car". She was laying in bed this one clip and he said "can I have a kiss?" "I cant reach you".

This bird was just amazing! How he can read her mind is really freaky and see what she see's.

Smile Yeah, Alex is a really amazing bird. Dr. Pepperberg has been working with him at the University where she works for over 20 years. I think all African Greys have the potential of learning that much if they had constant training for that long Shocked

Alex is part of a family of greys.
There are 2 others that are just as amazing that Dr. Pepperberg works with.

I have the DVD "Birds: Look who's talking."

Smile Yep, Griffin, and Wart. But they're a lot younger than Alex, so not as advanced in their training.

Sky Captain, have your seen "Training Your Parrot the Alex Way"? I want to order it, but it's kind of expensive, I was wondering if it's worth it.

The video just reinforcens what we already know. Repition with positive rewards.
And one has ro have patience. Lots of patience.

We live in a world of istant gratification. NA d disposable everything.
And we(well some do) expect animals to behave like video games.

It took me quite some time to see the video.. Sad Guess the internet isn't very good over here.. Sad
But it was worth it! What a special bird!

It shows that people who think that parrots just mimic (and don't think) are sooo wrong!

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Dim Smile
Yeah, Alex has plucked his whole body and has no tail feathers Sad Dr. Pepperberg didn't comment on it, it was just one of the usual videos of the two of them in a training session.

How's Sake? How did your consultations with Liz Wilson go?

Hmm, I wonder what set Alex off... Just shows that no matter how much stimulation and what kind of care you give your fid, things can always be screwy! if anyone has a clue how to care for a bird, I'd think it would be Dr. Pepperburg, you know?

Sake is a riot. It was like the floodgates opened: he used to talk a bit, now he talks nonstop, and he learns new words and phrases almost every day. He says everything from "give me a kiss" to "hi sake, what's up?" to calling the dogs with appropriate whistles and frustrated remarks when they don't respond. it is incredible! i should make a list of everything he can say. and he will speak in my voice sometimes, prescott's sometimes, sometimes the people he used to live with (we think), and he gets intonation and tone perfect. he is so funny!

I have not, actually, had a consultation yet with Liz. long story there. i'm ambivalent, to be honest. lots of reasons why... i've reduced the jumping to a minimum, and his feathers are really growing back nicely. I still want to have the consultation, but i'm hesitant to keep trying "new" things with him - i don't know, I go back and forth every day, and sometimes I am ready to send her all the stuff (she asks for videos of sake and a long form filled out, which i've done but it needs revising to make it current) and other times I think I'd best just keep working with him as i am doing now myself. i don't know what to do, to be honest!

ack, this got rather long and waaaaaay off topic. sorry!
