Would this be a form of socialization?  Reply with quote

Hi Everyone,

I have a deposit on a baby. My family and I MAY be taking a trip via motor home to Ohio. I thought about taking the baby with us. This would allow us time to be together. Do you think that this would reinforce socialization skills or traumatize the baby?

Thanks

Hi, Good question.... I know a lady from another group who is bringing her brand new Bourke's Parakeet on a vacation with her to "socialize" it.

I do see your concern about whether or not it will end up just traumatizing the baby instead of doing good. I don't know the answer to that. I think it probably depends on the individual. My gut feeling is that it will be fine. I think at a young age, they should adapt pretty readily, as opposed to an older bird who is set in their ways. If I took Gryffin my Eclectus on a trip, she'd be freaking out and not eating, etc. just cause she is not used to it, and doesn't have an outgoing and easygoing enough personality type. On the other hand, some birds take right to adventure! Good luck with yours Smile

Hi Wordybirdy. I had to think what a motor home was. At first I thought it was a motor, and I thought 'no' Laughing Then I thought a little harder and a light lit up. Idea

I know my birds LOVE trips, but I'm aware that not every birdy is the same.
Have you sat in the back yourself? Can you feel it when you drive over bumps etc? Or is it nice and steady?

When are you taking a trip? I think that a lot of it would have to depend upon how long you have had the baby. If she is comfortable with you and trusts you then I don't see a problem with it but I would sugest taking her on a few short rides before you go so that she can adjust. It would also let you know how she will react to an actual trip.
