Hi every one, I was directed here by someone at parrotforums.com to seek any further advice you may have about my YC Amazon...so I'll repost what I asked on that site. Every suggestion helps!
I have a 5 year old yellow crowned Amazon who has been an absolute nightmare since around December. He started off by jumping off of his playgym and dinner stand to try to rip me open with his beak anytime I would walk by. Then he progressed to screaming incessantly anytime that I was out of his sight, and then wanting to bite me when I came back. I live in a condo and feel that it's not fair to anyone to have a screaming parrot in the building, but am not really sure what to do to change this behavior. I also feel awful being afraid of my parrot, who I used to be able to cuddle, hold, and handle. Is it normal for seasonal aggression to last 3 months?
I now only handle him while wearing an oven mitt, which he doesn't seem to mind, but I don't know how to work back to feeling safe enough to have him on my hand, especially when most times he gives absolutely no warning that he's about to bite. I took the top tier off of his playgym to keep him from perching too high, and just bought him a ton of toys today, which he seems to be enjoying. I've had him since he was 3 months old and he's always been such a great bird until now.
Unfortunately, if this behavior continues and I cannot correct it, I will have to find Iggy a new home, which I really don't want to do. Sorry for such a long post, hopefully you all can help me out. Thank you!

Hi Lindsey
First, welcome to the forum. I hope you find what you seek here.
and secondly, I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through some problems with little Iggy.
I have heard of hormones lasting up to six months, but I don't have an amazon, so I'm not sure if that applies to them or not. I know that this is true for both the macaws and cockatoos anyway. Are you his prefered human? Do you know if he might have other human that he might have considered as 'soul mate'?
also there are hormones shots out there for birds which will curb the hormones if it gets too out of hands. I think it's called Lupron. May be you can ring your avian vet and check it out. I know it must be hard to have to think of rehoming your baby especially you've been together for so long!!
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, I live with my boyfriend, and Iggy seems to play favorites from week to week (i.e. sometimes he only tries to attack me and is fine with my boyfriend, other times he is fine with me and wants to attack my boyfriend). I don't know whether or not that is normal...it's just hard to see my sweet little bird turn into a biting machine! Six months is a long time, I hope that this doesn't last that long...if it does get much worse I think I will have to talk to his vet, just thought I would look for behavioral modification things first. Thanks again so much for the reply!
