Bird's feathers can use some help  Reply with quote

I bought a OW Amazon last month from a Mom & Pop country zoo. While ther I noticed this poor bird in with 2 conures that were picking on him. The zoo keeper sold him to me and now I'm trying to liven up his feathers. I'm sure once he molts out most of the dullness will be gone and I don't think he has had a bath in a long time. I only want to wait on that because I'm afarid that he will get a chill since he lives outside in a flight cage. He is ajusting real well and eating everything I feed him. I was just wondering if there is maybe something else I could be doing for him?

I think you can shower him, once you've made the spray bottle interesting.
Just play with it yourself.. Amazons are outgoing birds, aren't they?
I'm almost sure he'll come to find out what that bottle things is what you're having so much fun with!
Perhaps you can spray him then, carefully?

How warm is it where you live?

The recommendation I got from my avian vet is to give Harrison birdfoods juvenile formula.
I make small balls of them, by adding little hot water.
All the parrots I know just love them!

Feather problem  Reply with quote

Thanks so much I'll go right out tomorrow when the weather is nicer and see if he likes a little spray. It's been rainy and chilly hear the last few days so I don't want him to get a chill. He is older and I don't want him to cath a cold out there.

Tomorrow I'm going to adopt another yellow crowned amazon apart from the one I already made an appointment for to fetch. This one has been on sunflower seeds, fruit and everything from his master's table for 50 years or so. So his feathers do shine, but are pale. He seems rather healthy though. The first thing I'll do, is making him eat Harrisson's, like Tabu, my african grey. His breast feathers look as he has been picking a little on them. He also said aloud yesterday, when I first met him: " Oooh , AM I bored!" ( that is, the dutch equivalent of course!) This one they wanted to "put asleep" to prevent him from being sold after his master's death. Well, as you can imagine, I couldn't let that happen. So in a few weeks my flock will have grown to Two Amazons and One African Grey. And the Senegal still flying in the forest...
