| Blind Lilic Headed |
|
|
I am going to go see a blind lilic Headed Amazon in the morning. He is listed at $350 with his cage. I have been looking for a parrot for a long time. Its not the price that is making me go check him out, its the fact that he is blind. I can't stop thinking about if they are trying to help him with toys he can use or if he just sits there allday with nothing and nothing to see. I was going to wait untill my taxes came back to get a parrot and had a breeder all picked out. I had grand plans to play with it as a fledgling untill it was weaned and raise it my way. Now I am going out to see this blind parrot that I can'y get out of my mind for the last week. If It will work out I am going to have to ask her to hang on to him until my check comes. Half of me wants him to be a sceaming mess that I can not help, the other half hopes I will find a bird that needs me and is work able. (I have younger kids so I have to think about there safty too.) |

As you probably already know blind birds take a lot of attention and needs that need filling. As long as you're willing to do that and still provide it with a forever home, then i guess there's no harm in going to see if you two are a good fit with each other.
let us know how you go and what you decide on.
good luck.

I have been doing alot of reading on second hand parrots and have worked with some really sad cases at the zoo I worked with. I also work with special needs children. I have put a lot of thought about what a blind bird would need. I still have a lot of worries. This is not getting a new baby that will get its bad habbits from me. I do not know if this bird will be fearful. I am going tomorow with a open mind and a car there is no way I can stuff a cage into. I will not be makinga fast move here. This is going to be long term care for a vary needed bird. I just can't get him out of my mind........we will see what I find in the morning. |

I'm sure there's a reason why you can't get the bird out of head. But like you said, as long as you're willing to be open minded about the situation, that's really the best that anyone can ask for. Good luck. |

Shelly I think it's great that you want to help out this bird It's also a very big plus that you work with special needs children. It almost sounds like it's ment to be. What are the odds that a special needs worker comes across a special needs bird needing a new home
I do agree that it will be a challenge figuring out what works best for him/her. I'm sure he'll be a bit frightened with all the new sounds, as with any bird though. He'll become familiar with your voice and your voice will also soothe him when he becomes nervous. I think it will work out.
Good luck with the meeting and let us know what you decide |

Shelly, good luck with your decision!
I have to wonder why they are selling it, if they've had problems with it, or if it is a baby from one of their own clutches?
I know that sight is a very strong sense in a bird, but I'm sure that as with people, they can adapt well to their disabilities, or handicaps.
Just wondering, do you know how old it is, or if it's been blind since birth? |

I am so sad right now. I get to the persons house who is selling the bird and she has this Blue and Gold in a great cage. You could see it was well loved. She talks about her baby for a couple min. then takes my to a back room to see the Zon. There in with abandoned exercize eq is 2 vary small cages with large birds in them. One holds the Zon the other holds a AGT. I go to talk to the zon and find he is totaly insane. He was tearing at anything and hurting him self doing it. There was no way I could work with this bird with my kids around. If I had a room I could use that was just for him for awhile until he calmed down yes I would have thought about it, but as it is there is no way.
I turn to go after awhile and see the AGT begging to be picked up. At this time I noticed it had half of its top beak missing. I look closer and I could tell this bird was mutlated. From the look of it the beak had been cut off. I ask about it and she tells me yes she wants to sell this one to. I find out it is about 10years old. Its owner had passed away a couple years ago. Her kids had given it to the lady to care for so she put it back here to keep the zon company.
I open the cage and the AGT starts to beg with its foot to be picked up. I pick it up and it leans into my chest making a smaking noise saying "mmmmgood" I played with it for 20 min and it was reguratating for me. Before I put it down I had had pet it all over its body and even turned it on it back! It had started to get to wond up so I put it back in its cage and started to walk out. As we closed the door it was "calling"and yelling at me it would be good. This poor thing had no toys and the only way it could strech was to go down with its wing, not side to side.
I talked to the lady and told her that I could not pay for the bird until my income tax check came in. She told me with the way the bird worked with me she would hold it for me. I can also go back at least once a week to play with it. It hurt to leave that bird behind, the next time I can see it is Monday night.
I wish I can do some thing to help with the zon. I am going to take a bird centers name back with me monday to give so she can think about giving it up. I will be getting the AGT. I know it will be alot of work. I already have "Second Hand Bird" setting here next to me. As so as I can I will be posting in the Gray area. |

OMG, I can see why you'd be sooo upset right now.. I'm upset just to read it!!! Those poor bird... How can someone treat birds sooo differently!! I guess the b&g is doing ok. Oh that makes me soooo mad!! how can anyone treat birds like that!?!?!?!?!?!?!? its not like she doesn't have the sense to treat bird right, afterall, she has a nice caged and well loved macaw!! Aghhh sooo frustrating..
Though I'm sooo glad that you were able to take the TAG... It is sad that you have to leave the bird behind though... I wished that you could have taken it with you straight away.. I'm just glad that you found the TAG when you did.. Although I still feel sooo sad for the Zon.. I hope this lady will give it up too to a bird shelter/sanctuary... I feel so bad for that little one, it's probably going insane because of the condition it's living in!! |
