Hello Tom and welcome to Fluffies. We are all learning here and this IS the nicest bunch of people you would ever want to talk to. We are all new to this but try to share information that we have experinced or maybe something we have just heard about. I'm sorry but I don't think there are any groups where all your questions will be answered. You might want to get with the Yahoo Amazon sight. I'm with that and boy do they share a lot of information on that one. Sometimes it gets to be too much "information" about breeeding and things I'm not interested in at this time . I tend to just have a simple question about this and that. I'm more of a "pet owner" and just want to share information about what my birds are doing or what different foods i might try, that kind of stuff.
You'll see that we seem to be friends and talk about other things happening in our lives too. That is what I like about this group over the 5 others I belong to, we are like family here and we will try to give you what ever kind of support you need with what knowlege we have between all of us. I like to think that it is just waht I need
I know what your going through with the eggs on and off thing. I just took my red rumps away because they were'nt good. I just keep looking at it that if they make it they make it, I'll be happy to have little ones if it happens. I'm hopeing with this attitude that one day I'll go out there and find a baby bird! Mine are all for my own personal enjoyment so don't have a lot investested like so many people do. Keep us up dated and good luck, it will prouablybe the next time around and you'll have little ones
Again Welcome Tom...Dana |

Her first 2 eggs were 2 days apart. Then she laid 3 more eggs each 7 days apart. Thats 5 eggs. When is she going to quit? Im getting worried for her and her eggs. She doesnt eat very much on her own she relize on the male to feed her. I thought about taking him out but he is feeding and protecting her and nestbox. Any advice would help.
Thanks Tom !!! |

Hi Tom,If the male is feeding her in the nestbox
thats good
for some species of parrots which incudes yours, the female will nest the eggs all the time and if the male if feeding her it's normal so its nothing to be concerned about(don't take him out it's his job). After the last egg is layed thats when the incubation cycle starts,in your case Amasons take 3 1/2 weeks to incubate from the last egg and normally lay 2-3 eggs so it's a bit of a concern if there are 5 though it's not uncommon. For example my whiteface/lutino pair of cockateils nested and layed 11 eggs once,
phantom breeding
l call it so for that means not fertile.l had to dispose of the eggs after carefully checking each egg in case it looked grey not white,to do that you have to take an egg out of the box(don't worry for it's okay)and look at it in the sky an the egg will look sort of dark not white)meaning it has a young inside. If you see a line in the egg somewhere when looking at it thats unfortunately not fertile. For eggs are sort of see through in sunlight hard to explain typing.I would wait till the cycle is finished after 3 1/2 weeks give 30 days then if no response check the eggs. This is the unfortunate but a part of life in parrots even with experianced breeders. The parrots will continue to breed for they are bonded now and are monogamous, meaning for life, so they won't give up trying as long as he is feeding her let the cycle go on and if they fail, they will try again, and before you know it you will have young ones and be a happy family... good luck |

She started sitting on her first egg the moment she laid it. She didnt wait for the other eggs.
All the eggs look dark inside. The older ones more so because they are older (bigger dark spots).
My main concern was the amount of eggs, but if 5 eggs are not unheard of I will just have to wait and see and hope for the best.
Its unlikly that all the eggs will hatch but hoping for the best. If all do hatch
I would guess I will have to help feed them. I will give her a good chance and if she cant do it then I will help her out. I dont want her getting to run down.
Thanks Tom !!! |
