We have a chance to get a Orange Wing Amazon and I'm so excited! One thing has me worried. "He" is less than 30 days old and I will be feeding him. The price is awsome but I really want what's best for this little guy. I fed our Sun but he was fully feathered. I don't know what our Sun's excact age but he was a great deal older. This little guy is just getting pin feathers. I've also fed Teils but once again not this young. She's going to sell him to someone so I'm thinking I should get him. I will do my very best and do all I can. Anyone hand fed an Amazon? Any different from the other guys? |

I've hand fed our yellow nape and blue front....also our grey, one of our cockatiels and of course our greenwing macaw. I found the bigger the bird the easier it is to feed them. I had a heck of a time with the cockatiel. The breeder taught me how. Make sure the formula is not to hot as to burn the crop. We use 5 oz. dixie cups which I find easier than syringe feeding. Charlie and Misty were both about six weeks old when we got them. On three feedings a day but they went down to two rather quickly. Here are link to video of me feeding Sarah Beth and Ann. http://www.fluffies.org/en/flu.....ovie_id=98

Any questions feel free to ask. I'm not an expert but I do have some experience.

I'm leaving tonight to get our new baby for my Mom. The breeder is giving me a brooder that plugs into a cic lighter to keep him warm during the trip and I have a warm 10 gallon fish tank waiting. It's a 7 hour drive but worth every inch. The parents abandoned these eggs so she helped them hatch and has taken care of them since. They are just now getting a few pin feathers. Post pics soon. Wish me luck! Jrmno1sCarrie, I'm sure you'll hear from me soon...LOL |

He's home after a long night and day. We drove from North Miss. to Williamstown, Ky to get this wonderful baby who's been named Willie after Willie Nelson the singer. LOL I've got his bed set up and he's all warm and got a full crop. The wonderful lady who sold him to us answered all my questions and taught me so much! She was amazing! I don't know of anything more she could have done. She gave me a brooder that plugs in to a cig lighter or an outlet, sent me home with feeders, thermometers for his food and his box, talked with me for 2 hours about his care and said to call her anytime with questions. I wish I could tell you her name to really brag. She has other birds and they are something! I wish I had someone like her closer to me just to learn from. Here's a few pics of Willie. I will post better pics soon. Born Sept 3rd at 11:00 pm.

This is the way all breeders should be. But that guy sure is young, I question her on letting one so young go to a first timer. Her imumne system can not be strong enough yet, Be extra careful about handling this guy. But the breeder has already told you all this.

Glad you got back safe with little Willie. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Sounds like the breeder gave you a lot of imformation. Look forward on hearing and seeing Willie's progress.

Well, here's the first questions. Should I have a full spectrum light on this lil guy any during the day? Does he need any vitamins like PRIME or maybe BENE-BAC in his food? He's doing great. He's now 1 month- 3 days old and eats about 6 cc every 3 1/2 to 4 hours. His weight is 116 grams and about 5 inches tall. |

He gets enough vitamins in the hand feeding formula so you definately don't need to add extra. I don't think a full spectrum light could hurt any. Our birds all do well under them. Are you keeping track of his weight? That's really important. Good luck.......can't wait to see his progress in pictures.... |

I think I've gotten in the "min by min" habit. LOL My Mom calls when it's feeding time, everytime. She misses the last feeding cuz she's in bed eary to get up at 4am to visit my Aunt in the nursing home. She hasn't missed a feeding besides that. I can give anybody some great advice- if your lucky enough to still have your Mom, (if not, I'm so sorry) think of something really special to do for her. It's the best feeling to see her so happy! This is the biggest thing I've been able to do for mine and I'd do it over and over to see her like this. She gets to see her baby for the first time tomorrow and I betcha won't be a dry eye in the house! Our whole family will be there almost. THat's how huge this is to my Mom. Nobody wants to miss it! LOL This is one lucky bird. She'll have all his "stuff" ready weeks before she takes him home. |
