I am sorry, but I can not really answer this question, even though I have 4 amazons at home now. I have been bittin real hard, but Carrie has hardly been hit by one, With propoer training of the owner of the bird, they should not have to worry about it. Things only happen when the owner is not trained... As for my excuess. I do things that normal bird owners don't do. My latest encounter with an Amazon, It was a friends Amazon, I held it while Cariie trimed it toe nails, It let me have it when I let him go. So it was my fault.
What kind of Amazon are you planing on getting?
Is this your first bird?

I think amazons can bite VERY VERY hard, but a well behaved amazon won't bite very hard (Perhaps only during hormonal periods or when startled/ in overload?) |

Yes, yes and yes Sue. It is up to the owner to interput the parrots mood, even well behieved Amazons can hurt, when "hormonal periods or when startled/ in overload"
Not a good first bird. But a good bird if....... the "Rules" are followed. Learn to read a bird body language. (And move out of the way quicker) |

I only have heard of this through articles, I haven't found out myself.. Yet! (No no NO PLANS!)
I agree that amazons aren't good birds for MOST first time parronts. |

Oh Come now, you'd love the challenage. It is never dule around here with 4 of them. I can't wait till spring. Fortunately only two are of age now. I will send you an egg to hatch, I wounder what you would call an OWA & a RLA? A "Fiesta Amazon" ? No seriously I have been told by my breeder that this can not happen. I hope she is right...

Hehehe I can only imagine the singing in your house with 4 amazons! What a joy!
I think I'll refrain from amazons. I did fall for a small Cuban last time.. But I didn't dare to bring her home. I don't know enough about amazons to do this! |

What is there to know, They say "Jump" and we say "How High". They rule this house. Even Ann (GW) listens to Charlie.... |

I always shyed away from amazons, due to all of the horror stories. Then I got my mealy amazon baby Hercules, and I was hooked. I am still not brave enough to bring home one of the "hot three" but I do now have 3 mealy amazons and just absolutely adore them!!!
I think the bite depends on the amazon. My mealy's have fatter, less pointy beaks so when they bite it is more of a pressure bite (crushing finger) but I know some of the others have pointy beaks which I would think would equal a puncture...either way it hurts.
I have been bitten once (overload) and it hurt my feelings more then my arm |

Demeter,
I personaly have been bitten the worest by a Mealy. (It was my fault). I have not noticed any difference in the beak, (it still went into my hand just fine . Each bird is unquie and should be treated that way, true enough YNA (Charlie) is high stronge and goes into overload easy. It is just a matter of handle him different and be aware of his mood. It is the same with a Mealy is it not?

It is definately the same with a mealy, I know all the signs and obey them wisely But I definatly think they are a little calmer then majority of the other amazons....dont get me wrong, mealy's have huge beaks compared to the others, they are just a little more layed back.
I will agree that all amazons no matter what species have their own signs, one mealy always raises his nape feathers, even when happy...however, the other when he raises his, watch out, dont touch. You find out the "caution" signs real quick |

Just to add to that, I have been bitten the worst by a goffin, due to the very pointy beak, went straight through my finger...ouchers |

This is part of what makes the such a joy...All the difference. And I was nailed through the finger nail by a CAG, so yes that hurts and that is why the Amazons are so missunderstood, it can happen with any bird unless you know what you are doing and how to read them.
