I don't own a lilac crowned amazon. Sad
Perhaps someone else here can tell you more about them?
Or perhaps about amazons in general?

I can tell you a little about the lilac-crowned amazon. I am a docent at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson and we interpret the lilac crowned because s/he is a bird of the Sonoran Desert. They are a middle sized amazon. Their native range is in Mexico near Alamos, on the border between the states of Sonora and Sinaloa. They live in the mountains which are 4,000 to 5,000 feet high. The parrot I interpret is now 19 years old and s/he was born at the museum since his parents are also on display in our aviary. Since s/he is not a pet, we have not encouraged mimicing behavior but he has picked up a few words along the way. Amazons can live to be 60 years old. Like all parrots they are social birds and live and hunt in a flock. In the Sonoran desert they love to feed in the corn fields and the farmers do not like them. They are protected in Mexico, as are all parrots. I have heard from some Orange County California visitors that there are feral flocks of parrots in their area and I am sure there are some lilac crowned among them. Our parrots love to eat mesquite beans. They also love corn on the cob, mangoes, peanuts, walnuts, pistachios, etc. The one I interpret is left-footed and I am very lucky that s/he has taken a liking to me and seems to enjoy going out with me to meet our visitors. I am amused that I came to this web site to find new information and have ended up sharing what information I have. I am sure you have discovered that a pet parrots takes a lot of commitment. They are noisy, messy, want lots of attention and live a long time. But the love you get in return is well worth it. Good luck with your new friend.

Becky, you might be more specific in what you need to know. Amazon's in general are basically the same. I have a 26 year old yellow nape. My 2 1/2 months with her have just been amazing. Considering her age and history she has exceeded my expectations Very Happy Also, she isn't messy at all. I guess I'm very lucky. I'll be lucky to find 1 piece of food on the floor on a daily basis.

The only thing you need to know is that they are likely to become overweight which can lead to a fatty liver disease. So seeds and nuts should only be given as a treat. Watch out for sugar and salt. Dehydrated fruits can have a high content of sugar. So again, treats. I recommend a pellet diet with no added sugars, salts or colors. Fresh fruits and veggies. Chaquita enjoys the occasional whole grain bread (1/4 piece) with a dab of peanut butter folded in between. Of course, a treat. The peanut butter is high in fat.

Amazons aren't as noisy as some of the larger birds. They are known for their opera singing too. Also they are considered to be one of the top 3 talkers. Chaquita is pretty quiet unless we get her going by yelling and shouting, she finds this to be quite fun and definately gets involved. Other than that she just mumbles to herself or calls for me when I leave the room.

Any more questions? Don't hessitate to ask Very Happy
