| Major breakthrough with Romeo! |
|
|
Hurray! I've been allowing Romeo more time out of his cage and put his T perch adjacent to the cage. He climbed down on the perch for the first time and began playing with some wooden beads I had left on the bottom tray. I used the clicker and gave him a treat and began trying to work some more with him on the perch. Still didn't want the perch but just getting on the T perch was a big step. I leaned a little ladder on the T perch so he could get up there easier from the bottom tray.
Next day, he climbed up the ladder and got on the T perch as pretty as you please and without any coaxing. He is very receptive to stepping on the perch one foot at a time. He even leans over, grabs the perch, brings it toward him so he can step quicker and get his treat. LOL I finally got both feet on for a just a second tonight. One small step at a time..
He also has been doing alot of loud trying to talk at dusk. He keeps saying BOBO over and over. So we have been thinking about changing his name to BoBo since that seems a familiar word to him. We thought maybe using words he is familiar with might help him to begin to talk more. He really perks up when you call him by the name BoBo. What do you all think about changing his name?
I am so proud of his progress in such a short time. Only 6 weeks. He is letting me get very close to him and is getting used to my hands being close to him. We play peek a boo every morning when I take his cover off. It is such a joy to see him happy, playing with his toys and shredding his adding machine paper.
Just takes patience (which I am undeniably short on)

Oh, it sounds like things are going so well After reading your homepage & Romeo, or Bobos story, I'd say that's one very lucky birdie! And he's just beautiful, by the way!
I've never done the clicker training myself, but have read about it a bit & am seriously thinking about working with it.
I have read that peek a boo, & "fetch", he drops something, you fetch it, over & over, are 2 of the best ways of letting a bird get to know you & gain your trust.
I think it sounds like you're doing a wonderful job & have plenty of patience. It sounds like you've come a long way, keep up the great work
And personally, I think changing his name to Bobo is a good idea! |

Good for you Vel! I love hearing about wonderful adoptions and I would have to say you have a great deal of patience. I too read Romeo's story on your home page and it is so sad to hear the conditions that some of these lovely birds are kept in. Romeo/ Bobo is extremely lucky to have you as a parront. He is absolutely beautiful. I have a DYH amazon too, although I would have to say mine is a great deal younger based on the amount of yellow Romeo/Bobo has. Do you know how old he is?
Anyway, great to hear about your wonderful progress. Keep us posted.... |

That's so wonderful to hear! I can so much understand you're excited over this..
I'm not sure about changing names.. I'm sure, intelligent as they are, they'll accept it in no time.. So if you feel like it, then it'd be ok?
It does sound cute, BoBo..
(I'm not sure about pronounciation as I am dutch.. We say it like BoBo and then the 'O' is pronounced like the 'O' as in the word 'low') |

Hello All!
I am not sure how old BoBo is. The terrible guy I bought him from said he "thought" he might be about 10 years old.???
Well, I thought I was so smart getting BoBo to come out of his cage and get on the T perch. He wouldn't even get near it today. He always flaps his wings real hard to let me know he is hungry. I just kept trying to coax him down on the T perch but he wouldn't budge. He came up close to the front edge of the cage so I went up and put my hand sideways and held the treat out and LO and behold he stepped one foot on my hand! I clicked and treated him several times doing this. He leaned down and beaked my hand a couple of times but I told him in a stern voice "NO BITE!" and he quit right away. He kept trying to hold my hand there so he wouldn't have to step each time (Sneaky little dickens, huh?) He didn't put both feet on yet but just the fact that I can offer my hand to him without him biting is a big step! He still is trying to say Hello I think and he calls BoBo and laughs and lots of loud squawks etc at dusk....around 7 to 8 PM. I usually put him to bed between 8 and 8:30 and he gets up about 9 or 10 am.
He is getting where he really looks forward to seeing what he is getting in his food dish. He loves the birdie bread and he got a few pine nuts today.
Still doesn't like strawberries. He liked the cooked navy beans. I only give him about a spoonful of each new food. Sometimes he will eat quite a bit of it and other times ignores it completely. But he is playing with his toys and just having such a good time doing it.
I will post a new picture of him on his portable T perch playing with his toys.
Thanks everyone
