Hey Sami
As far as I know, molting are different for each bird!! some molt really fast and loose all their feathers pretty quickly, and some just takes forever and have little burst every now and then... Apollo is the slow one, he's been molting for like 9 months now!! Blah.... I don't think he'll ever stop molting... grrrrrrr |

Manu seems to go through almost a continuous molt, that isn't quite as obvious as a bird that molts all at once. But the avian vet has told me that that's not at all uncommon, or unhealthy for house birds.
It sounds like Frankie may be going thru a molt. I can't remember how old he is off hand, would this be his first time molting, that you are aware of? I freaked out the first time Manu went thru a molt! I really panicked! But I think that was his first molt ever & there were piles of feathers! It's never been like that again since then tho. |

Chaquita has been molting for about 3 months now. I know she's not plucking because when she's grooming, one will drop without a peep from her. Even if it's a primary or a tail feather. If they squack when the feather comes out then it could be plucking. But it sounds to me like molting. She lost a tail and 2 primary in 2 days and she probably wont lose anymore of those for about 3 weeks. It'll be crest and back feathers now, again. |

lol... I collect Pepe's molted feathers too . They're just so pretty and colourful, some of them have all colors of the rainbow on them. I figure one day I'll use them to make something pretty. Heh, I guess I have the brain of a little kid |

LOL Ksue, that's like me! I pick them up & examine them closely for any possible abnormalities & think "I know I should save these for something", then toss them |

| feather collecting and premature panic, I hope! |

Hi fellow bird brains!
First a quick funny about fallen feathers. My husband picks out a couple of especially colorful and good sized feathers that drop from our blue-front amazon,"Mayzie". He sticks them in the hasp on the strap in the back of his b-ball caps. We take Mayzie everywere with us, taking turns being human (shoulder) perches. It's become an interesting challenge for my husband to invent new ways to fasten the feathers securley enough so Mayzie can't remove them!! I'm sure she's caught on to the "game" and I secretly time her, now!
I'm hoping for some advice;info;opinion; whatever you may have to offer. Mayzie is just turning two yrs old and has incredibly beautiful markings. Her 'blue front' is interspersed all through the yellow on most of her head. Until these past few days, that is. She did just go through a pretty active molt, but this is new. The blue is sparse now and she appears to be ragged and thinning of plumage right above her beak. Otherwise happy and healthy. All other feathers really great. Is this worthy of a call to the doc? Or a natural phase of molt?
Thanks for listening!
Typical Mom?!

Hi Cindy,
How long has Mayzie been molting for? Has she stop feathering out with new blood feathers? I mean have you noticed anymore new ones coming through? Generally, if birds go through a heavy molt, their feathers do tend to thin out a bit before 'filling' out again back to it's 'original' state.
I haven't had a heavy molt with my cockatoo, but with my budgies, when they go through a heavy molt, they do look really ragged. But they usually come back alright. As with the colours sometimes, the pigments do sort of fade therefore the new feathers coming through may change a little expecially with through a heavy molt.
One of my chooks, she was really dark brown all over when I got her, but she went through a heavy molt, and now she's all speckled!! well she's now sort darkish red brown with light brown specks all over her now!!
I'd say keep an eye on her... As long as she's happy and healthy and eating well and acting normal, I'd say she's doing ok. Probably just the molt. You can always also keep an eye on the poop, they are usually the first indicator that something is wrong. Good luck. Please let us know how Mayzie goes!! Cheers

Cindy,
I'm sure it's just a molt, she sounds healthy and happy.
What most Blue Front owners don't understand is that there is a subspecies of the Blue Front called the Yellow-Shouldered. I actually had a Yellow Shoulder, but like you, didn't find out until he lost most of the blue on his forhead. They generally have extensive yellow on the bend of the wings. Sometimes 'white' behind the forhead yellow. And again, as Cheeta said, it all just could be that Mayzie lost her colorful feathers first and it's probably a big molt for her. |
