My Amazons(Blue, Billie, Lucy & Babe)  Reply with quote

Hi eveyrone.. thought since I had commented and derailed other's threads it was time I started my own.

Blue (BFA) - and one of my fav story's about him:

We taught Blue early on that when he would beak me and squeeze a bit too hard to 'fake cry' and say owwwww that hurts! Boo hoo (before I knew about the drama reaction... and besides it never did encourage any of them - as it has been handed down- to bite harder) and sometimes he'd say Owww that Hurts Mama!

I am a smoker and when we lived in Seattle, I would go out on the deck to have a smoke and Blue had a rope out there and sometimes I would put him on the rope (wings clipped of course) and he'd hang while I'd go to the other side and smoke.

One day he was on his rope and he starts his Owww that hurts! Boo hooo cry.. it's so fake it's miserable and you can't help but laugh! I said Blue, you didn't hurt me baby, it's ok. He kept 'crying' and I couldn't figure it out.. and all of a sudden I stopped and listened (DOH!) and there WAS a puppy crying in the next yard over!! How smart is that?! He knew the puppy was crying!

It was priceless! He is so responsible for MANY of the things Billie learned and then passed down (They are listed in subject in order I got them).. because Blue never met Lucy or Babe and yet Billie my lil teacher has taught them well! She KNOWS she in charge of this flock!

Billie (YNA):

Well here is a story about Friends making 'deals'!! LOL Aleta and I were friends as I said before - she had a YNA named Babe and Babe died. She was over 20 and Aleta just didn't know that so much had progressed in bird science - so we vowed (after I got Blue) that we'd learn as much as possible and THEN she'd get a DYH (What I REALLY wanted) if I'd get a Nape with her!! LOL Her choice first!

So off we go to the breeder of Blue to pick out babies. I had established the relationship with the breeder, but she went first because she had handfeeding experience and lived in my basement and after they were sure her FID was ok, they'd let me come pick up mine after they were sure she could teach me properly. Worked for me.

So off she goes by herself and she comes home with Sammy - he's a character and a half now and VERY well spoken - far better than Billie I will say! I couldn't go with as they wanted as little traffic at the 'farm' as was necessary. She says - it was so great they presented me with about 6 babies to choose from and Sammy chose me! Awwwwwww how sweet. So OF COURSE I expect the same thing when I go out 1 week later (she had to go back - be weighed and examined and stool sample taken)! Not!

I go out to the bird farm all excited- I was gonna get to CHOOSE my baby right? The breeder comes out and plops ONE baby in front of me and says "That's yours". EH? So the first thing that bird did? BITE ME! Hard! Well as hard as a 7 week old Amazon can. Wink He told me be careful Kathy it's not been socialized yet and only really knows people for feeding time. Ohhhh ok.... DOH! I moved too fast.. my bad. So I got down on my knees and was at her eye level and we talked really quiet and moved really slow and there it was... she was coming home with me! I never did ask the breeder why I didn't get to choose Billie - why she was 'handed' to me, and I later learned why. I had said to the breeder earlier, I specifically wanted a female.. that Male YNA's and sexual maturity scared me.... so SHE was the one because it WAS a she - altho I didn' learn that until she went for her DNA test! Billie is exactly 3 days older than Sammy and is her official brother - came from the same parents Smile

When I got home with my baby, Aleta looked at me and said I ALMOST TOOK THAT ONE! EEEK! What was even funnier was that Billie had a yellow S on her forehead and I had WANTED to name it Sammi - the S in yellow was the clincher and I said you stole my name and it fit her better! LOL

Weaning her was terrible... Sammy was done whip boom over and out..... She was rotten disposiioned about it, messy (and to this day messier than ANY bird I have ever fed) and just plain didn't like 'feather clean up afterward'. I made several scared parront visits to Blue's Vet and of course Aleta and I had scales.. and Aleta was using my vet also. So when I said he's fussy, and won't eat, and Sammy weighs like 100 grams more he breaks out in a great big smile and said Kathy - the bird is fine dear.. didn't you say you wanted a female? Umm yeah, he said those are all really good signs! DOH! That was the day she had her DNA test.

Lucy (DYH):

We (Aleta and I) were getting ready to order our DYH's now... and our preferred breeder had died, and by this time she was in Wyoming and I was in Oregon. I found an ad online, and the people were fairly close to me and they were selling a DYH and I could pick - heh. So I figured it came from the same Aviary that we were getting our DYH's from so it wouldn't hurt to take a drive and go peek (as hubby rolls his eyes). Well there we were and Lucy was the one to take to me and He said it's a girl I know it is! You are killing me here, she's my fav....and she IS a sweetheart. She's never been DNA'd but just shy of her 'laying an egg'..... she couldn't 'display' anymore 'mature hen' behavior.. flat ont he bottom of the cage clucking and wings flittering - although she looked totally busted this year when I caught that it was her (figured it was Billie - she is older)! In the dark on the way home... out of the carrier I hear.... the BEST Chicken sound "I have ever heard from a bird* - Cracked us up and to this day, we utilize that sound the most! LOL Go Lucy Chicken!

Babe:

There it was, she didn't wanna do it.... our time to get what *I* wanted and her time to live up to her end of the bargain. She didn't have enough money - so I LOANED it to her!! LOL

We talk to this breeder extensively and since I was so very happy with Ms Billie and the female's dispositions and Lucy's for that matter - as I was convinced she was female - though a large female.. I had wanted another Female. Blue was gone by this time so keeping it all females would have just made it easier - especially with another DYH in the house.

So the bird breeder picked a bird and shipped it from Texas to Portland. I picked up my baby and Aleta encourage me to name it Babe. So there he was Babe. He did have all the 'characteristics' that are slight in Amazons for being Female but THIS is why visual sexing always doesn't work. Lucy is BIGGER and has a Bigger head, and broader nares - all the things that this breeder looked for - and Boom - Babe DNA'd out a male *even the BREEDER was shocked she said she was pretty good at it* Fed like a male and is now starting to be male! LOL I had a thermos full of water and handfed him right there in the airport. Smile I had some pretty strange looks!

Aleta lived pretty far away from the airport, and was coming out to see me anyway, so she said ok, I'm next have mine sent to Portland and pick it up for me will ya? Okies. I did, and the bird was beautiful and there I was handfeeding in the airport again 2 weeks later LOL They must have thought I was nuts! I take care of it for a couple of days and Aleta gets there and you know - kind of like I was with Billie - yes it's a baby but it's not REALLY what I wanted LOL So she names him Sweetie - stays at my house a couple of weeks so we can coo over our babies like new parronts do and off she goes home! Handfeeding on the road Smile

So the next summer my turn for a road trip and by then I had gotten the now famous in the Poicephalus forum - Beeper. I gathered all the fids up and took my dog at the time - Sheltie named Cassie and we were off!

We start talking about how we loved our birds blah blah blah... and we had the most startling realizaions! LOL Sweetie was her Fav of all her birds (She has CAG, BWP, YNA and Sweetie - DYH) and MY Fav was Billie the YNA - EACH of the ones we didnt want but went INTO the deal with cuz the other said they would get the type the other wanted!! ROFL!!

Now you as well as we know - Parronts are like Parents.. it's not that we love ANY of our FIDS less we just enjoy them differently. She enjoyed Sweetie's disposition more, and I enjoyed Billie's.

So.....the moral of that story? Never make a deal with your friend or you might end up with your FAVORITE bird!! LOL

You derailing topics? Nah! Wink Derailing sounds pretty negative to me, so I can't agree with you ha ha ha!
Please keep derailing, as you call it LOL!

I had so much fun reading your 'own' topic.. Smile It took me some time (pretty long he he he) but it was so much fun! Smile

Blue is so terribly smart! I couldn't believe it when I read about that puppy..

Sue,

I meant get the introduction to my flock over-with in the Zon room - since I have more of those that are pets than any other. The writing of it because I knew it would be long.

Cheeta,

I apologize again for the length, but I thought it would be a fun story for you guys to hear how I ended up with them all. Smile

I'm glad everyone has enjoyed the story, and I enjoy reading all about all of yours!! They are so great, talented, funny and smart!

We are so blessed to have them in our lives.

I don't always punctuate the best, so I apologize for being unclear. I'll try to work on that.

I really think that my long term net use and the fact that I am a Gamer (I play Everquest - online Roleplaying Game) just has made me REALLY lazy in the typing/punctuation department.

Yes, something like it.

Everquest is an MMORPG Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game. (Mouth full that one!)

You create a character and 'fight' get levels, and get equipment money spells .. a whole bunch of things. I have been playing for about 3 years now.

I'm disabled so it interrupts my day - when I can STAND to play it .. I get really sick of it sometimes and the longer I play the more I get sick of it!!

It is fun, I have me a lot of great people via phone or in the real, and it's been a good experience overall Smile

Wow, a whole mouth full, I am glad you explained what it stands for else I wouldn't have known it! Smile

Parfie, I feel a little shitty for not understanding why it interrupts your day?

From the usual grind.. gives me something to 'do' that is more social than being a home most of the time. Yes I love all my kids - fids etc.... but sometimes I just want a break without leaving the house. So it puts a break in there. I suppose I said interrupts because I can plan to be on for an hour, and that turns into 4 LOL And that would certainly interrupt everyones day!! Wink

Don't feel bad Sue, it's really just the way I type, and my lapse normal English typing, the worst part is, geez is that I used to be a secretary (among many other jobs) at The Boeing Company LOL
