Normal Amazon Behaviour??  Reply with quote

Just wondering if anyone else had a little rambunctious baby boy?? Not that he really seems "nippy" but boy he wants to play a little rough, almost like play biting, I am sure that this is probably something that these birds do in the wild with their playmates, but in order for me to make sure these dont turn into big hard bites in the future I kind of wanted to nip them in the bud in the beginning. Anyway of doing this??

I feel if I do that I am kind of messing with his "playtime" with me. I do the peek a boo game with a towel, and he likes kind of attacking the towel, not in a violent way but a playful chewing way....I swear he reminds me of a teething puppy Laughing

So much different then my little Athena, much different attitude that I need to learn from.

I really don't know anything about the Amazons, but my macaw gets the same way when he's playing & I've always compared it to puppy behavior. And with Manu, just like a pup, I sometimes have to end the play session when he gets too rough. When he's settled back down, I love him up with pets & praise. I imagine in the wild when they get too rough with each other when playing, one has to stop it somehow!
Some times when Manu is on the couch playing with me, he gets so wound up that he starts doing his panting thing. That's when I have to get up & away from the couch for just a couple of minutes & let him calm down!!

Apollo does that too!! Only he goes for our fingers instead! LOL.. he doesn't bite hard when he's playing with us, but boy sometimes when he gets into that 'right' spot, even if it's not hard, does it hurt!! I think to some extent birds uses their beak as a way to play with the mate. I've watched many parrots and cockatoos in the wild do that. they kinda 'nip' at each other while rolling around on the ground or in the tree. So yeah I'm sure it's pretty normal for them to want to do that with their flock member even if it's human. Smile I'm not sure how you can go about discouraging it, as we actually encourage him to play with us as long as he knows not to bite hard, and when he does bite harder, we stop the game.

That as my thing, I actually enjoy playing with him like that, but I had read on a amazon site to discourage rough play, I guess to "make" a nice birdie. I just think its something that comes natural, so as long as I can control it, I am going to keep doing it. He is beginning to learn what is too rough, and he stops, so that's a good sign...thanks for the replies:)

Hi demeter! So your new baby likes to play rough. Chaquita likes to nip sometimes and it's always when I have her sitting on my belly or on my shoulder when I'm watching TV. I think she gets bored. She'll chew holes in my clothes and sometimes she'll grab skin Shocked I give her a bold "NO" and she'll look up quickly and growl and then I'll tell her in a quiet voice, after about 10 seconds, "Quita's a good girl" and pet her head. Experts claim that birds understand a firm voice and facial features as negative when you're disciplining and don't like it. I'll notice her atempting to do it again but then she'll look up at me and I'll tell her she's a good girl. Seem's to be working.

Hope this helps Wink

LOL, mine does that growl also, his new favoite spot is sifting through everything in my purse. He likes growling at me if I try to go through the purse while he is in it.....guess I am going to have to buy him his own purse Smile When he goes for something he does look at me while he is doing it to see if I am going to react, which I think is hilarious. Crazy birdies!

I used to think my mealy was so slow, boy has he shown me recently, he has something he shouldnt I say "ah ah ah" he grabs it and runs faster then a chicken, I swear...LOL

Those amazons can be a little mischevious can't they Laughing I've noticed with Chaquita that she enjoys things with my scent on it. I can almost bet if you get your mealy a purse of his own he won't enjoy it as much as yours because it won't have your scent all over it and you wont show much interest it because it isn't actually your purse. He see's you digging into "your" purse and that is why he's interrested in it. He wants to play with what you play with. Perhaps you can slip a few little toys into your purse, extra keys, bells, little tallon toys Smile I'm sure he'll find great pleasure in finding these little treasures in your purse.

With Chaquita being in her mid 20's, I don't think she's much into play anymore. She's a bit laid back. She's a lovey and perfers petting, scratching and climbing or begging for food that me and hubby are eating. I would be nice to see her being a bit more playful. Maybe she just doesn't know how to play. I've only had her for about 7 months now so I don't know how she was raised in her 20+ years.

Buddy's not very playful - I totally missed out on the whole nipping/teething stage (how sad for me Laughing ). He's at least 14 now and a bit of a sedentary old man. The only toy he REALLY shows an interest in is his pinata and he loves to destroy it.

Yeah, Hercules is definately going through his little baby teething stage Shocked Not that he bites hard, but he just wants to put his big ole beak on everything...arm, finger, shirt whatever he can gnaw on. He doesnt use much pressure, and I do have him understanding when its starting to get too hard, I say EASY(in a stern, louder voice), then easy(in a quieter voice) and he lets go, which is how I trained my sennie, and they really do seem to understand. I have my sennie now where I dont have to say it sternly anymore, I just say easy and she knows.

I am finally now not as afraid of his beak as I was when we first got him, its so, so big that I was very hesitant, which I dont think helped my situation, I wouldnt let his open beak touch me period, but we are both starting to trust each other a little more now, so its easier. I now can put my finger in his mouth and not be scared to death he is going to snap it off, its a trust thing, and to me that is a very important bond between owner and companion.

OH, and finally he is starting to understand that he is not allowed on the shoulder, dang, was he persistant....he would head straight to the shoulder and I would have to say no, and get him back to my hand or wrist, he is rarely trying anymore, took alot of patience and time but it worked. He is just so big that I dont think he would do well on my shoulder, however little girl Athena is always on my shoulder, but I completely trust her there, I guess its kind of hard to explain.

Thanks for letting me ramble on Wink

Just to add to my other rambling, Hercules is an acrobat, continuously!! We have this big roped hoop for him, I swear I rarely see him upright, he acts just like a caique, way more in climbing behaviour then my sennie. I am going to have to set up a different out of the cage playing area for him with some boings and stuff cause he is crazy. Anyone got any pictures of some good play/climbing areas they have set up??

Hey Demeter,
If you look on my diary page you will see Pi my lorikeet and Ioannas Pepe climbing around on a ropes course I set up at home. It hangs from the roof down to about chest height and they just love it. They spend hours hanging from every angle imaginable Shocked You can't really see it all, but i'll post some more pic's soon and try and show it better. I made it with rock climbing cord from work

Hey Fi,

As a matter of fact, I went on to your diary a couple of weeks ago and was showing foofighter(my man) your set up. I love it and it would work good in our back room where we have wood rafters like yours. I will have to find something a little thicker for him to walk on, he's a big lug Smile

But more pictures of your set up would be awesome..thank you

Romeo is 17 months old and going through his very playful stage. he is beaking when we play but not hard. We love to play on the couch and he gets in behind me and makes a whining sound. I then put my hand all on him saying ' Mamma is gonna get you". He is also still talking up a storm. We are up to 37 different pharses and words. It is sooo funny to listen to him and the sentences he puts together. The " Meanest bird in the world" pharse is still my favorite Laughing he says this when Newbe and QB start their fussing Laughing Someone told me when I first got him that Yellow Napes like to talk more than scream and boy were that right with Romeo. It's like having another person in the house. Laughing

I agree to about hardly ever being righ side up Laughing Romeo will even eat his warm food out of his bowl hanging upside down. I just got one of those rope ladders for him and boy is he loving it Laughing Maybe I'll be able to take some good pics soon Wink dana
