Since you need to get him to the vet today you're going to have to towel him. Make sure his eyes get covered as this helps reduce stress. He'll get over it, a lot of people have to towel their birds.

Good luck!

hi eveyone, thanks for the advice about towel but was rather lucky and he went in the smaller cage with a bit of gentle pushing........just returned from the vets after some successful clipping but vet has only clipped one wing is this normal.......well he will be out and about the house later i will see how his feather less flight goes n hopefully this will help with his training......at least it will keep my tempers down not having to chase him round stood on a chair...... Twisted Evil will keep you posted......thanks karen

Ummm I have to say that one wing clip isn't the proper clip!!! Is the vet an avian vet? how many of the wing feathers did he clip? did he leave any of the first few feathers on the wing unclipped? It's actually not very good for the bird to only have one wing clipped. Please note that some bird can still fly with only one wing clipped, so please be careful if you're planning on taking him outside.

as we have just found out it was a wasted journey to the vets after they just clipped one wing, our feathered friend is still flying round like nothing has been done to him..... Evil or Very Mad the vet left the first five feathers on the wing they clipped then worked back along the wing towards his body.......would it be a good idea to get the other wing clipped the same, would this give the desired effect of lack of elevation as our bird still thinks my light fittings are ideal perches come climbing frames Very Happy thanks karen

Confused Karen was this an Avian vet, or just a regular vet? I really don't think this guy knew what he was doing... sounds like he clipped the secondary feathers Mad A propper wing clipping is both wings, and about 5-7 of the primary feathers. You can use where the primary coverts end as your guideline to where to start cutting. Cutting the secondary feathers can cause bad balance and can be very dangerous for your bird Sad

thanks for that advice........the vet i visited was just a regular vet and after watching charlie fly effortlessly round my house again i have spent a few hours researching wing clipping on the internet.........to my dismay i have found out the my vet has not got a clue about bird clipping..... Sad i found out enough info and diagrams to have a try myself which has worked a treat...... charlie now glides nicely from his cage to the floor over a distance of about 12/15 foot and lands safely on the floor...... Smile he still seems to have good balance and can elevate himself to a couple of foot from the floor...... Very Happy i know now that my local vet is not the best place to go for bird care and am hoping to find somebody locally that has a better knowledge of these things but i will keep reading and posting items on here and will keep everyone informed on how my charlie's training is going thanks karen

Very Happy Oh good Karen! I'm glad you did it yourself the proper way, and Charlie is gliding fine. I can't believe that vet didn't tell you that he didn't know how to clip wings. You should go back and ask for your money back and ask him to refer you to an avian vet.

By the way, I know what you mean about having to chase him around with a chair Laughing I had to do the same with my lovebirds when they weren't clipped! It was so frustrating! hehehe

Karen, I'm so glad that Charlie is now clipped properly. It is so much better for the bird like that. I'm just curious, when you said they worked towards the body, did they trim the secondary as well?

When i first got Apollo, all his left wing feathers (except the first three primary) including the secondary flights were clipped off! it was awful as he can still fly, but if I trim his primary properly, he wouldn't be able to glide at all since he's missing all the left secondaries... So now I have to wait till he's fully feathered again to trim it properly.. I have a feeling by then, I am not willing to trim his wings anymore since I just love watching him fly around, and especially when he comes looking for me. He has this really determined look on his face when he does it! It's so adorable!!

Well anyway, good job on trimming his wings properly. Smile Well done.
