what kind of amazon do I have?  Reply with quote

Hi I am new here and also new to owning a parrot. I recently rescued an abused parrot I'm pretty sure he is an amazon. I am trying to find out what kind. And any help on how to care for him would be greatly appreciated. I have had him for two months now and he is bonding well with me but not my husband. When I got him he had been treated very badly. But I think he is adjusting well now. He is bright green with a yellow face and a little bright red by his beak. He also has a bright blue patch on top of his head. Hes very sweet but he doesn't talk much. What kind of treats would he like and what kind of toys?? Thanks so much for any help and for letting me post.

Hi there!

Welcome to this board.. Smile I hope you'll enjoy your time here!

If you have some photos, it'd be easier to say what kind he is..
You can add photos by making a diary page or homepage.. Smile
Please follow the link below to find out how..

It's hard to say what he'd like for treats and toys. Have you tried broccoli & carrots yet?
With toys, it's one big guess, but if you want to try something cheap, I'd suggest a rawhide shoe (for dogs)
Zazu dragged it through his cage for a long time, ignoring the rest of his toys!

thank you so much for the warm welcome and promp reply. I am not too good at this computer thing yet but I will go and see if I can figure out how to get his picture on here. A rawhide shoe huh? Wow! I woulda never thought of that I am gonna go and get him one today. I will try the carrots and broccoli also. The vet had suggested fruit but he did not like it. Very Happy I did look some pictures of Amazons up and he looks identical to a picture of a red lourdes that I seen. Well, Thanks again and have a blessed day.

Hi!

Don't worry about the computer skills.. You'll master them.. Smile

If you get him a rawhide shoe, you can introduce it (so you won't run a big risk to scare him -I don't know if he's easily scared?-) by making him interested. (Playing with the shoe yourself)
You'll be surprised by the result!

Please let us know about the veggies.. Smile You can also make them interesting like the shoe.. Smile (Pretend you're not seeing him)

Hello lisainjc!! aka lisa? Welcome to fluffies! It sounds like you may have a blue fronted amazon. Without a pic, it's hard to tell. I'm a bit of a dork when it comes to computers too but if I can figure it out, I have faith that you can too Laughing

My amazon is the same way with my husband. She loves just me but enjoys listening and responding to hubby and boys. I've only had her for 4 months now. You can read her story in my diary. In time I'll work with her with the rest of the family. It's a very slow process, but there has been some progress. Your birdy may have been abused by a male and that is why s/he is responding to hubby in negative ways.

Diet, well, amazons are prone to obiesety which can lead to liver damage and other problems. A lot of people here feed their birds Harrisons pellets. I don't like to purchase things on line due to identity theft and stuff like that and I don't have Harrisons available at my local pet store so I feed Chaquita a breed select, Kaytee Exact Organic. Avoid colored food, salt and sugar. Buy seeds like sunflower and peanuts at your petstore cuz they're unsalted and only feed these as treats. Fresh fruits and veggies, or frozen, not canned as these are high in sugar and salt. I mean, canned isn't going to kill your bird if you offer a piece here and there, just don't make it a regular part of your birds diet. Cooked pasta, rice are nice snacks too. Chaquita likes whole grain bread with a little peanut butter spread on it. She's a bit of a begger when I have something to eat so I always give her a taste as long as it's not toxic for her.

I'm gonna ramble here a bit, but I want to give you as much info as I can since your also new to parronting Wink

Toys, you can go to the toys, cages section and get some good ideas. Go to your pet store or make your own. As long as the wood isn't treated or painted. Food coloring is good for coloring homemade toys. As far as toys go, it's all trial and error. You just don't know what they will play with.

Clean water dishes daily and empty any old food daily. Clean poo off perches as you see it. Don't let it build up. Your bird will be with you for up to 80 years so you want to keep them healthy. Give your bird as much out time as you possibly can. Get a T-stand or play area for your bird and interact as much as possible. They love to be a part of anything that you do even if you're doing gardening. Chaquita will sit on my shoulder when I go outside and do yard work or something. Think of your bird as a 3 or 4 year old child, that is how much interaction and attention you should give.

I'll stop here. Any more questions? Feel free to ask Very Happy
