| crimson rosella in the middle of the city |
|
|
I was walking at uni today and all of a sudden I see this crimson rosella baby on its own just hanging out on a really low leaf-less tree. Crimson rosellas are pretty common in the country around Melbourne but I've never seen one in the city, especially in the middle of the city where my uni is. I thought it was strange that it was just this baby alone and hanging around that close to humans, I almost thought it was someone's pet bird for a second . I was almost touching the tree by the time it decided to fly away. Pity I didn't carry any seeds in my pocket, that could've been fun ;(. |

That would be so neat to see! I think they're so pretty! Too bad you didn't have a camera with you at the time! |

Well done Ioanna for they are not common in Melbourne to see, but not often??The Crimson you saw can breed with my Pale-headed Rosella(Stich)and produce a Maroon Hybrid Rosella when they breed. The Crimson Rosella are quiet friendly so to speak(providing you have seed..he)Over in outer Melbourne there are flocks of them with Cockatoo's that climb all over you.Maroondah Reservoir so to speak.Must of felt great to see one in the city hey? Thanks for letting us know |

Yeah, I was pretty surprised! I just wish I had a camera with me, it could've been a funny photo of this colorful bird on a barren little tree with high rises behind it hehe. It took me a while to realize that it was a baby crimson rosella too, I got really confused because of the green patches on it.
Greg do the rosellas all have the same whistle? This one I saw had a really beautiful whistle .
I didn't know different types of rosellas could breed together.. I wonder what a maroon hybrid rosella looks like! |

I would just love to see a crimson rosella in the city Ioanna... It would be lovely, but problem is we don't get them over this side of Australia!!! LOL... Instead we have rainbows introduced to WA flying all over the place making lots of noises as they fly pass!!!
The other evening, I was counting how many of those lorikeets would fly pass our house to where ever they roost, and I got to about 260 and gave up counting!! they kinda fly in a group of from a pair up to about 15 birds... so it wasn't too hard to count as the groups come in interval... It was fun watching them fly by though. |

Bih inner Melbourne is full of rainbows too, I only really began to notice just how many of them there are when I got my own and learned the sounds they make... now I hear them everywhere! . I have to say, they do screetch a fair bit but I'd take their sounds any day instead of the annoying "raaaaa raaaaa" of the crows!
Maybe this baby rosella I saw is a sign that rosellas are starting to come inside the city too like the lorikeets; that would be really cool.
As for the Australian Bird Company, I've been meaning to go for ages! I'd love to see all these different parrots that I've never seen before! Give me a date and it's on |

It would be great to have you join us Kelly. I live on the other side of the city too but I figure it's worth going once to see what they have .
Time-wise I'm flexible on weekends as long as I don't have to get up *too* early . |
