| New family on the baord! |
|
|
Hi all,
My name is Jonathan, and I live in South Africa.
I have recently become the proud owner of a golden mantled rosella, I have decided to call him Fawkes. I need some advice on how to get him a bit more relaxed around me, it seems like he is reasonably tame, but I am scared that I might make him wild and scared if I dont treat him right. Any help would be much appreciated.
I will post a pic as soon I can.
Thanks all! |

Hi there! Welcome here!
That is sooo cool, a rosella.. Please share photos with us if you have them..
Don't be afraid he'll get scared. Why are you worried?
Are his wings clipped? |

Hi Welcome to Fluffies.
Just spend time with it talking to him and sitting next to him, handle him as much as you can and also as much as the bird allows you to. If it bites you, don't react to it, as it'll learn that if it bite, it'll get attention from you. |

Hi all
thanks for the replies so far.
His wings are not clipped, and like i said, I dont want to make him even wilder than he allready is, and being a newbie, im not too sure how to handle him properly. i am now looking all over the internet for information, and i've been into 2 bookshops to find literature about exotic birds, but to no avail so far.
Any tips?
Thanks

Congratulations!
Becoming a new parront can be a very nerve wracking thing, becuz we do want to do what is best for our birds. It does take a lot of patience when first bring a new bird into the home, it takes them awhile to feel comfy with the new environment & people. I don't think there are many people who live with Rosellas on this forum. Have you tried doing an internet search for just "rosella"?
How long have you had the bird & do you know how old he is? And, I'd love to call him by a name, rather than just "him" |

Hi All
I have thought of a name for "him" I've decided to call him Fawkes (I'm a bit of a harry potter freak).
I have ordered 2books to try and help. One is called parrots for dummies, and the other one seems to be a problem finding the complete idiots guide to parrots.
I have noticed that it is going to be a labourious job, but I havent been this passionate in trying to do something new and constructive as being a good parront as you say
will keep you all posted.
Thanks for all the replies so far!
regards

Hi Jonathan... Glad to see that you're doing a lot of research to help your with your Fawkes.
One suggestion though, you might want to look into getting his wings clipped so you can tamed him down. He won't become wilder if you clip his wings, in fact, it'll make your training with the little guy a heck of a lot easier for you and for him. Make sure you go to an expert at wings clpping though coz a lot of people actually do more harm than good to the bird when the trim it. An avian vet is always a good way to go with wings clipping. |

Hi Hi jonathan,
Great to have you here... and I hope that you will stay for ages...
May I ask how long you have had Fawkes.. (Great name by the way)
If you have had him for a short period I would just let him calm down from the move to you and a new place and people... He will, i'm sure, start calling for attention..
One other thing, keep the cage where you are most often.... makes fawkes part of the family
Regards

Hi all
Fionam: I think fawkes used to be part of someone else's family, I've had him for 2 weeks now, he arrived at my parent's house and after putting up flyers, no-one has claimed him to be thiers yet, so i took it onto myself to take good care of him. I have the cage right next to my desk and I spend most of my time in my room, talking quietly to him a lot of the time, just to get him used to me. I don't think he trusts me that much yet, it seems as soon as he cannot see me, he sings/whisltes away quite happily. That is why I want to get all the literature so that i can become a good parront
Cheeta: I am still looking for a avian vet around here, it seems that avian vets are a bit scarse around here. I actually went to a vet on tuesday and asked the receptionist lady that "i am looking for info on a golden mantled rosella" and she looked at my looking slightly confused and asked me "is it a dog?" witch i found quite funny, allthough i must add that it is probably not neccesary that the receptionist knows everyting... I did get a number of a person who might be able to help, but I have not yet had the chance to contact him.
Will see what the guy says and let you all know!
Thanks for the help and info, I allready feel like a family member here! |
