Awwww that made me cry
Do you know that in some respects I feel that we should not have birds in cages at all.. Am I being too harsh?
Sorry guys when I see things like that I always start thinking.

Hi Fi, sorry to upset you
No, you're not being too harsh, I agree with you, and that was the message of the video. Definitely makes you think.. |

Shirin,
Please do not worry about making me cry (its easy to do!!!)
We should cry at certain things and they were angry tears...

Thanks for sharing that video Shirin!
It's another one of those vids that shows both the good and bad sides to captivity...I'm sure that all birds would be much better off out in the wild, but you can't just release them if they've been raised in a home, ya know?
So giving them the best they deserve, and that you possibly can is sooooo important when owning birdies.
I try to keep my fids out of their cages as much as I possibly can...the only time they're in there is if I'm gone for more than 5-10 mins....just for their safety.
That is also another reason I've vowed to not BUY another bird, and just give homes to rescues and fosters...
I see the first images and I just bubble with anger....but then the later images, showing all the caring and loving people with birds that look sooooo much better, I can't help but smile.
The world is such an amazing and interesting place...there is evilness and hatred, but there is also love and compassion...If only we could replace the former with love.... |

I think you missed the point of the video It didn't show anything good about keeping parrots as pets, and if you read the text that went with the video, the message was pretty clear: parrots should not be kept as pets. The images that you saw of the birds looking slightly better were of the birds that had gone through rehabilitation at the Foster Parrots rescue, they are birds that have suffered and have been abused. Just because now they are at the shelter and better taken care of, and perhaps even loved, it doesn't take away from what they've already been through, and what millions of other parrots continue to go through. The small number of people who give their parrots the best life possibe in captivity and grow old with their parrots pales in comparison to the number of people who buy their birds on impulse and mistreat, abuse and then rehome their birds. So the point is, should we keep parrots as pets at the expense of the huge number that end up abused and unwanted at shelters? Lets say for example there was a boarding school for children, and 70% of the children were being beaten and abused on a daily basis. But 30% were being treated like Royalty and loved and spoiled, and were very happy well adjusted children. Should the boarding school be shut down because 70% of the children are being abused? Or should it stay because a small number of children are very happy? Do you care about all children, or just yours that happens to be in the 30% that's happy? Something to think about
It's great that you can keep your birds out of their cages 24/7, but do you really think that's the reality for most households? Most people work, go to school, have families and social lives, and can't afford to be at home all the time. No one is suggesting that people should go out and release their captive bred birds into the wild, no doubt they would not survive. The only solution is to stop supporting the industry, and only adopt, and I'm glad you've decided to do that . |

hmmm...I guess i did miss the point... ahhhh well...I'm slow
I don't like videos that make people feel guilty about owning birds... yes...there are horrible horrible situations for them, and those NEED to stop, but, The birds with the Foster Org. thing are still in captivity, and they adopt them out to people more knowledgeable and prepared to own them.
I totally understand people having to go to school and work, so in that case they should give their birds the biggest and best cages they possibly can...
In my case, and pretty much everyone on here, I see cages as a place for them to be protected...
I'm fairly certain that as soon as everyone gets home...OUT come their babies!
& There are cases that the cage is mis-used %100....not as a safe haven for the birds, but so the people don't have to deal with them.
I hate the thought of all the birds being ripped from the places they knew and grew up in, and being forced into crates not suitable for even one bird.
it sickens me....
there's really no way I can see around any part of this that doesn't make me feel guilty. My birds parents or grandparents (or whatever) were most likely wild-caught.....And that makes me apart of the whole devastating cycle...
So I guess I try to keep my thoughts as clear of guilt as possible by adopting and fostering.....selfish...I know. |
