| Breeding Percy |
|
|
Hi Greg,
I was wondering if you can give me some advice on breeding my sweety white faced cockatiel Percy. I have decided to breed him because he really has amazingly beautiful colouration (very dark grey, with almost a marbled effect, and very symetrical white markings) and after 6 months of perserverance I have decided he would prefer life with a mate in an avairy environment then as a companion bird. He came from an avairy and has just never really taken to cage life. My boyfriend is building me a steel avairy and I was wondering what dimensions you suggest and how may breeding boxes etc I will need for one possibly two pairs. Also I know this is a very open question but what colour hen do you think I should try to pair him with? I would love some unusually coloured babies, but of course I don't mind what they look like. They are all sooo cute Thanks for any advice I will try to send some photo's of him soon. |

Hi Fi,well done in your decision with breeding Percy there are many answer's l can type but l'll try an keep it simple..he..he.Firstly how busy do you want me to keep your boyfriend building?has he been good..he.he..just kidding .Anyway my avairy size's for breeding are 4metre's x 2 x 1.9.(THIS includes a 1 metre wired area for the tiels to view the world top to bottom/sides )Try to raise the level of the ground above half a foot so if there is any heavy rain the floor won't get flooded or if it is to be concreted the the same.Seperate the roof from the top of the avairy to allow ventilation on an angle that meet's at the end.Having two pairs in a avairy well that can have problems? for if both the pair want that nest in that then they will even kill the babies to get to it(seperation breeding better)I have breed two pair's in one avairy but it has happened so ??? Anyway.,.Lutino hen(yellow) would be the best in my opinion..Albino better. For each pair, start with two nest boxes as then two pair, three..gives them choices which they like unless of course they are just one pair with no competition..ask me more question if you need for l can go on forever like l have and if you like to see photo's of my breeding avairies just go to Lielow on the Parrots of the world section so you can see an idea what l'm talking about good luck |

Thanks for your advice Greg. You can write as much as you like. I never get sick of advice. My boyfriend works for a steel shed building company and has been making cat enclosures lately so he has the know-how and the materials to make a great avairy hopefully. I have a few plans drawn up, it will definately be raised, just working out the final dimensions. Thanks again, im off to find a lutino hen |

I have just bought the future mate for Percy (hopefully) She is a pearl hen. I decided to go with pearl because I was having a lot of trouble trying to find a lutino which was definately a hen. Most of the shops around here don't have much idea and the only reputable breeder had none available. The hen i chose seems nice and healthy though so fingers crossed they will get along well. |

hey Fi
Congrats on the new hen. Fingers crossed for Percy taking a 'fancy' on her! I'm sure they'll get on well since they are the most sociable birds around the joint!!
Good luck with the breeding.
Cheers

Congrat's Fi on your purchase hope all goes well. How did you go with your cage size and if you need any advice on there bonding "so to speak"breeding or queries? just let me know and l will do the best l can to help One thing l can tell you know is let them be for a week or so them introduce some boiled egg mashed(about a quarter of one twice a week) in there diet it increase's there protein intake and so they have will have plenty of energy for the dance followed by the moon walk..he..he :lol:Good Luck and let me know the progress.Just in case my pearl in the extention is a hen though not ready for breeding(too young) and if sex doesn't work out l'll be happy to swap a female to a fluffy member free Also l give away a CD as you may have seen some pic's in my dairies of the Cockatiel growing up free!(sorry Sue for advertising just thought l can help ) |

Her name is Winnie (inspired by the old 'Wonder Years' T.V show ) Thanks so much for the offer Greg and the advice. I'm sure I will have a zillion questions. I introduced them last night and so far so good. I put her cage next to the avairy and Percy started dancing and prancing straight away. I think he has been a bit lonely At the moment they are both on a seed diet plus percy has (some) veggies, so once they are settled I will slowely be trying to convert them to pellets. I will also try the egg. Winnie came from an indoor avairy and I don't think she has ever seen the real sky and sun before. She seemed to love it and climbed to the side of the cage so she could bask in the afternoon sun. Can't wait to see how it all goes. But I realise it will be a long process. |

Like the name Winne, for l remember the wonder years also. Good to hear Percy doing his dance in front of Winnie great start .Glad to hear also Winnie enjoying the sun after being enclosed in an indoor avairy, for the sun is one very important thing when raising/caring for birds .And hey don't be worried about the long process for if the conditions are right it will happen very quickly. In my experiance it can happen within 2 weeks after meeting then laying eggs Good Luck |
