Breeding Tiel question ????  Reply with quote

My two Tiels bred and laid 5 eggs, all but one were slugs, the baby hatched and then died two days later. I guess they were not sure how to take care of the baby. This being there first batch of babies.
Well my question is, I removed the nest box and cleaned the cage real good, and they just started to breed again. Seperating them is not an option, they will scream and screech if seperated. So if I do not put the next box back, will that keep them from laying again? Is it healthy for the female to lay another batch of eggs so soon. Any other suggestions from anybody about this?
Any and all response will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Dan

How old are your birds and is this the first time your bird has laid eggs? More of the parents energy is used in feeding the babies than incubating the eggs. So if she lost the whole first clutch and is in good shape you could let her try again. But I'd certainly rest her after the next clutch. A persistent pair may not stop breeding even without a nestbox. But they may be more satisfied if you let them try another clutch and then remove the nestbox after that. If they are young birds the clutch could have been clear because the male was not old enough to fertilize the eggs.

I am not sure of their exact age, got them from someone else about 6 months ago.
Yes this was their first clutch.
I will put the nestbox back up and let them lay another clutch.
Should we pull the eggs this time and incubate them ourselves, or let them try it again?
Thank you your response.

I'd let them try again themselves or else they're just going to want to keep laying more anyway. Were the other eggs entirely clear or were there babies that died in shell?

Robin,
They were all clear with the exception of one which had a dead baby in it.
Thank you for the advice, I will put the nestbox back up this evening and let them get it out of their system, hopefully they will have better luck this time.

Thank you,

Dan
