my sennie used to try to mate with me.
about taking away the towel, the bird might be even more stressed with it..after a while, I mean. Because it would hurt his feelings when the towel didn't react like a female bird would. He could get stressed and fuserated with this, and that could lead to feather picking and other behavoir probelms. that is why we shouldn't encourge the mating dance. the bird will be fusterated when you don't run off to carve a hole in a tree.

The problem with your Senegal could lead to him becoming possessive and nippy, I had this problem with Cheeky one of my Senegals so it's best discouraged. I don't want to sound preaching but the breeding of any animals needs to be done with care and shouldn't be done on a whim. I agree with Cathy in that way. If you bred from your bird he could lose his tameness and prefer his mate, also what would you do with the offspring, would you hand rear them, what about finding good homes. It shouldn't be hard to discourage this behaviour, just put him in his cage and give him timed out when he does it, perhaps you could give him new toys or things to interest him and distract him. |

Shirin, Have you had fertile eggs from your lovebirds? I would think so if they keep mating... I know your doves have had clutches.

No Julie, I've had no eggs from them I think they're both males. I've had Hazelnut sexed and he is a male, but when I tried sexing Pistachio she got a hematoma, so they couldn't get any blood. |

Poor Pistachio I'm glad he/she is okay now. You can use feathers and send in to have DNA sexed that way... So even if they are both male, do you think they will still mate? haha

Well, what I meant by (will they still mate)... is that you said you think they are both male, and in an earlier post you said they were mating? That's okay and all, just curious

By they still mate, I meant they still copulate not that they produce any eggs. |
