How can you tell the age?  Reply with quote

Hi Greg,

I was hoping you could help me with a question. How can I tell how old Lorito is? When I got him last month the owner told me he was 4 months, it's just he seemed so big for 4 months is there any way of telling?

Thanks
Andrea and Lorito

Ofcourse, I don't know it for sure, but at 4 months they don't grow very much anymore.
Unlike cats etc, birds grow most of their size when they aren't feathered yet, then start to develop feathers..
When they're fully feathered they don't grow that much anymore.. Smile (Ofcourse, a little but not like a cat or dog.. Smile)

Hey Andrea

Like Sue said, most birds are at their full size before they reach the age of 4 months old, they might fill out a bit more weight wise, but not much more though.

I'm not sure if there's a way to tell how old a bird is really. I wish there were ways that you can find out, but unfortunately there just aren't any around at the moment. Sad

Agree with Sue's comment, one way is to go and see another at a pet store if possible and compare, though it is not alway's right. With my Cockatiel's for example recently(Clowny and Co)Co was born after Clowny and yet is bigger in size than Clowny.Tail size in young birds is shorter after they leave the nest is one way though 4 months is to late to tell there,Another way is a DNA test that will tell all.Parrots like all birds keep there apperance at there best, age no barrier. Wink Let us know if you find out Lorito's age anyway like to hear, great photo's you have of Lorito too Very Happy
