making friends  Reply with quote

hello!
I think of getting a female friend for Hermes, my red rosella.
Can I put them both in the same cage right from the start or should they stay separated for a while until they get used to each other?

How about their age? Hermes is about five months old. What if the female is a year older than him?

Hi like I mention before, I really don't know much about rosellas, but i'm assuming that they are just like most of the parrots, so I would say, it depends on the individual birds as to whether they'll get along or not. I generally as a rule would not put two bigger birds together in the same cage. Even smaller ones can harm each other if they don't like them.

As with putting them together straight from the start... that's not a good idea. You'll need to quarantine the bird for at least 45 days after you've brought him home just to make sure that it doesnt carry any sort of disease that will transmit to Hermes. I would also get a well bird check up from an avian vet when I get the new bird home.

What about birds of different kinds?
When I visit pet shops, birds are always seperated according to type.
I wonder if this is just the way shops work or if different types of birds can cohabitate.
What if I bought a senegal or a cockatiel and put it in the same cage? Would Hermes feel he has company or would they distrust each other?

Vis-vitalis, I have a friend who has 18 birds, and most of them are paired up and share cages. Some are same species like his eclectuses, but most of them are different species and they do fine together. I guess my friend got lucky that way, that all of his birds just paired themselves up. As Bih said, you do have to do the 30-45 days of quarintine anytime you're introducing a new bird to your flock, and after that I wouldn't recommend putting them in the same cage right away. You can never predict how birds will react to eachother. they could hate eachother, or it could be love at first sight. Make sure they have seperate cages, and after the quarintine introduce them to eachother really slowly. Introduce them in a neutral room, away from any cages so there's no territorial issues, then gradually put their cages in the same room, then move their cage beside eachother, and allow them to interact with eachother daily with your supervision. You'll know when they're ready to share a cage, if it ever gets to that. If they start preening eachother it's a good sign Smile but please don't put birds in the same cage right away as they could kill eachother.

I own a rainbow lorikeet and a cockatiel. There cages are next to each other all the time and they enjoy each others company, but when they are out of the cages the lorrie bosses the tiel around a lot. He is definately the boss. They tolerate each other but I wouldn't say they we good mates Wink But then my housemate has two budgies, a boy and a girl. My lorrie absolutely loves the boy. They preen each other all the time, and the girl and the tiel usually do as well, so I guess it just depends on the birds personalities.
