| Parrotlets breeding? |
|
|
Hello, I have 2 Pacific Parrotlets. My male is Plato, who is 9 months old, and my female is Mya, who is just 5 months old. They were introduced a few months ago, and have been getting along great, eating, preening, doing everything together. Well, two days ago I actually saw Plato trying to breed with Mya, so I just went to the cage and opened it, and they came out and all that activity stopped. Yesterday I saw them again, and it looked like they were both participating. I know they are WAY too young, so I needed to separate them. They are sooo not happy living apart. Their cages touch, but they still squawk constantly, until I let them out for "playtime", when I can watch them like a hawk. I was told (by the breeder) that they wouldn't breed if I didn't give them a nestbox. No one told THEM..
HELP... I really just want the one cage, for now. I planned to breed them when they were over 1 year. Is it possible for them to breed, but not lay eggs?
I have had cockatiels in the past, but these are my first Parrotlets.
Thanks!

Very good question Angel!
Sorry I can't help you with the answer, as I've had ZERO experience with breeding, but I'll definitely be watching this topic to see what kind of replies you get.
Hopefully some one will be able to help you. |

Hmmm, I really don't know the answer to that question. I think if they mate, they'll get eggs but I'm not sure? |

hi hi..
I would assume that a little parrotlet behaviour would be similar to a budgie in terms of behaviour.
I would also assume that when the breeder say that they aren't going to breed if they don't have a nest box is also correct as that stands the same for budgies. My experiences with budgies is that if in a mix sex populations (just as the one in my outdoor aviary), they will have the (believe it or not) casual fling, and yes they do mate. But that's where it ends. It's like they are 'practicing', but yet no eggs would come of it. But do beware that, some are different (just like the case of my little Lemon) will lay eggs without a nesting box, but that is quite unusual. in that case, I break up the pair for a bit. Lemon now has a mate, but she doesn't produce anymore eggs after 'casual sex'. All my budgies starts 'practicing' at a very young age, but I don't give them nestbox to lay eggs. They just have fun with it!! LOL.
I think that those two will be fine together. If they do mate, I don't think that she'll lay an egg. They will only lay egg when they know they have all the requirements to raise a family. |

Thanks for all the replies! I have put them back together, and they are sooo much happier. They are back to mating, but only once a day, and it does look like "practice".LOL..
Thanks again, and I will keep posting.

I sure hope that some day, when they are old enough, your plans to breed them will work out good! Good luck with it! |
