The only I know of to be 100% certain is to have them DNA tested. An avian vet can do that by obtaining blood from the bird, or you can obtain a kit & pluck a certain amt of feathers yourself & send them to a lab.
However, I don't know where you can obtain one of the kits, as I've never used one. My avian vet tested my macaw when he was obtaining blood for a complete work up. |

Are you planning on breeding, I take it? What kind of bird is it? With some birds, there are certain characteristics that people use to determine sex without having them tested, but it's not 100% certain, tho some people are very good at it & someone else on here may be able to help you with that. |

The characteristics vary enormously depending on the breed. eg. female cockatiels are generally much quieter then males and do not whistle, female Rainbow Lorikeets are (usually) a lot more yellow chested then males etc. What breed are you talking about? |

The female's head is generally a lot more rounded than a male, and also a little smaller in size. |

I can tell if a bird is a female or a male by the way it sits on a perch. Males sit higher, and have a narrower stance. A female looks like her belly is on the perch. Aslo, you can feel by the vent. A female will be wider than that of a male. to allow for the eggs to pass. |

This procedure can only tell the sexes if your parrot is mature enough and ready to breed being an adult.
Young parrots have the same narrow bones in the vent until they start to mature and the female will then expand. |

I've found also, with feeling the vent, the bird has to be relaxed. If it is tense, a hen can draw itself tight, so it seems more like a cock. |
