Sparkle s health  Reply with quote

Dear Cheeta: Hi! My kids took the fact that the eggs won t hatch pretty good. Yesterday my kids and I had to go and spend the day and the night in a friend s house cause we were going to fumigate ours. And so we took our cages with us. It was no problem because they live just a few blicks away and we went in our car.
This morning, though Sparckle was out of the cage "for good" but she looks pityful! Sad He feathers ar all fluffed and she looks sick. I wanted to take the box out but something told me not to yet. That I should wait till I get home this afternoon and then do it. Meanwhile, I d like to know what to give her. She s got fresh food and water and I could give her a piece of lettuce. Do I take the nest box out now? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi there

Glad to hear that the kids aren't too disappointed with the infertile eggs. There'll always be next time if you want it to be.

The poor Sparkle, she's probably way too exhausted after sitting on the eggs for soooo long!! The poor thing really need a rest before the next clutch. I would probably advice you to take out the nest box now if she has truely ignore the eggs which sounds like she has. Just a question, have you been giving her calcium while she was laying eggs? If you didn't she is probably suffering from the lack of calcium. Give her a piece of cuttle bone, or even better scrape some of the soft bits into her water for her, and even her food. Keep a very close eye on her and make sure that she doesn't get any worse. keep her warm as much as possible, but don't sufficate her though. Oh, Lettuce are of no nutritional value, try giving her some celery leaves instead if you like. Budgies tend to love celery leaves.

Try giving her a spray of millet and see how she respond... make sure that she's still eating. Usually when hens come out of sitting, they usually look pretty pityful, hopefully over the next few days she'll perk up. Otherwise you might want to take her to the avian vet. But please I would definitely say that the nest box has to come out for the time being. Let her recover, and may be over a few months time you can try again. Oh just one thing, when you take out the nesting box, just watch for any distress signal from Sparkle of the missing box. Most likely she won't care as she's bored of sitting, but just in case...

Let us know how Sparkle goes.

I'd take her to the vet. Lettuce isn't good as it doesn't have much nutrients and is mostly water, I'd try spinach instead if your going to give her greens, mum used to give hers egg and biscuit to get food into them, I don't know the specifics but I know birds benifit from a special diet when they are breeding. Could she be trying to lay more eggs? In the mean time keep her warm

hmm that's a good point Shell. If she is trying to lay more eggs and she hasn't got enough calcium, she could be egg bound, which is a bad bad thing as most the time, it is fatal to the little thing. Not trying to scare you or anything, does she look like she's straining or anything?

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about Sparckles eggs Crying or Very sad I really don't know anything about breeding. But I have heard that the parents, esp Mom, do look pretty rough through the whole experience.
But, as others advised, I would check into supplements, esp if you are planning to breed her again.
I hope Sparckles is OK!
