Thinking about breeding....  Reply with quote

Hi all
I'm hooked, lined, and sinkered with all this new babies photos from Greg!!! Anyway, I am seriously thinking about going into breeding birdies... though I haven't quite decided on what type of birdies just yet.

So anyway, I decided to go into the local bird shop to check things out and ask for opinion there, and to my surprise, they told me to stay away from Lorikeets and the Indian ringnecks because their value have dropped in the market! Not that I want to breed for money, but anyway.. The lady I talked to, recommended a few birds.... and.... wait for it..... she said Western Long Billed Corella!! that's like having another two Apollo around the place!! man, not sure if I can handle that.. hehe.. or the Major Mitchell.. that's two Zazu around the place... Sheesh.... what to do...

then, she said, if I wanna go into smaller bird, I could always try budgies (which is like the rabbits of birds world) and also cockatiels. So anyway, right before I left the store, she came bounding up and said Alexandrine, and also the Barrabands are great for breeding!! And boy, that got me thinking.. Barrabands, now they are pretty birds!! I might seriously think about that.... You see, I'm in the process of looking for a house to buy... I'm currently renting, and there just isn't enough land for me to breed now.. so I'll be looking for a place with lots of backyard!! Smile So watch out Fluffies, when I get myself all set up, I'll be breeding birdies left right and centre!! Very Happy

So what do you gals and guys think?? I'm very excited, so I'm doing as much research into breeding as possible currently so at least I'll know the basics of how to. hehe.. Smile though I already know how to breed budgies. hehe. Smile

Cheers
Bih

p.s. Talk about a long post!! sorry bout that. Smile

Thanks Bih,l'm flattered.. Embarassed Very Happy Anyway it's true what you have said about breeds from your petstore with the breeds so really??it's what your heart contents, that makes you happy to see Smile One thing in mind is how much time you want to spend with your breeding pair/s, for example l take about 40 minutes just to clean and feed their avairies everyday. That's just with three pairs..for l believe in what you give you pets they shall reward you in return with happiness"so to speak" Smile Reseach is excellent and having experiance in breeding is excellent too like you have. But depending on what your speicies you decide l would start with one pair and see how it work's out, just like l did with the Cockatiel's and now??? Alexandrine are a good choice but you need the space aswell, hmmm well Lovebirds??don't know its a hard one, hey! l know it Macaws then l can by one..just kidding Very Happy One parrot that does make an impression is the King Parrot especially the male Shocked anyway good luck in your choice and take your time to and don't worry about the long post either..he..hee Laughing

Thanks Greg for you input! I really do appreciate that. Time is no big deal. I like spending time with the animals with or without the cleanig bit... so that's no big deal...

Of course, I was thinking of only starting with one pair, then seeing how I go with the one pair. I wouldn't start up with more than that! no way on earth would I be able to handle all the fun!! LOL.

I never thought of either the lovebirds or the King parrots... have to think about those guys. Though I think my heart is really set on the western Long billed at the moment. But then again, those Alexes are just simply gorgeous as well!! Very Happy That's alright, I have about a year I think before I have to make up my mind. hehehe.. though it could be earlier. Smile

Oh Bih! How exciting!! I think that's a great idea for you!

I'm so jealous of the breeders! But I know that I could never do it. I'm far too nervous & just don't think I'd have the time. Nor do I have the room & facilities Crying or Very sad

If you decide to move forward with the idea, you know I wish you all the luck in world!!

Cheeta, my best advice is to start with what will sell.

While ALL of the birds you mention are beautiful and of course great pets.. one thing you have to consider, is which are the more well known in your area. While I'm not saying Lovies, Tiels or whatever.. I am saying that you want to be able to sell what you have raised and if enough people aren't educated about that type of bird, then they might not buy? What about the Poicephalus family? I just think for your first pair you should go with something that will sell well..... and that people 'know about' in your area. Alex's and Barra and WLBilled are all not real known in the states (of all I would know the Alexandrine the best). But again all of those might be fairly well known down there. Where will your outlet be? A pet store? Are you going to sell to the public? All this is stuff to think about and I bet you'd make a fantastic breeder of whatever you chose to do Smile GL in your pursuit!

LOL Bih! Is this just your mother instinct showing up? (Raising babies LOL!)
Two Apollos? Two Zazus? Be careful what you start! Smile
I have also heard that cockatoos are quite hard to breed, as some males slaughter the female.
I also heard that this can be solved by offering a large square instead of a rectangle aviary, so that they can perform their 'courtship flight'? I don't know how it's called!

Those barrabands are indeed beautiful birds.. Especially the male. I saw one on photos and I really had no clue what kind of bird it was. What a beauty!

I think you should get a house with a huge backyard right away! LOL!

Thanks Kathy for your vote of confidence, muchly appreciated.. Very Happy and of course also for your advice. Smile

The cockatoos, any sort of cockatoos, if they are handraised, they will sell. Quite easily actually. So that's not a problem really on that side of things... and the Alexes and the Barras are becoming quite popular here, particularly the Alexes. At the bird shop two weeks ago, I went in to get some seed, they had 8 baby alexes, and when I went in a week later, they had brought in another 5 new babies. So they are quite popular at the moment. Not sure about the demands for Barra as they are only become more known, and there aren't too many breeders out there at the moment, so you don't come across too many baby barrabands.

Yes I will be selling the babies pending on if I decide to keep one or not. However I will be doing private selling so I will be able to screen the buyer that way. Make sure that they'll get all the help they'll need to get a companion bird when they get older. Sad as it is, most people here just hasn't quite got the mentality of bird being a 'best friend' but rather a creature that they can look at. Anyway, that's my goal anyway. To teach people on the fun side of owning a bird. Smile Like all of us here know very well already. Smile

LOL... Too funny Kellie.. Smile thanks for the giggle.

Not only will I have to mortgage the house I don't have, and I would have to move over east to do that too!! We as a state of Western Australia prohibits the entry of any Poicephalus family...

Actually nevermind, I just remember the Meyers are actually allowed here... however like Kellie said, With about $14000 a pop, I'd say unless I win lotto, I'd have to wait to breed them.. Though I can look at it as investments... hehe.. you know buy a pair and sell their babies at a ridiculously high price (since there's no breeder here for them at all!!!) and make my money that way!! LOL.. No, somehow I don't think that'll work too well. hehe.

Hi Sue

Yes, I've heard that too regarding male killing female, but I was told as well by the expert, if they are in a bigger aviary where the female can escape, then that shouldn't be a problem, and of course the problem lessens as well if they are a strongly bonded pair from a young age....

And yes I do have to agree with you that those barrabands are absolutely stunning birds!! would be nice to own one. Smile hehe. Think Apollo would mind a friend? hehe.. I think that's not going to happen!! LOL

Hey I may have BEEN to Aussie but they wouldn't let me go to the parrot shops!! LOL I had no idea that they were as rare/outlawed in parts as the Zons. Like I said - those that could afford it, and could suffer the 'quarantine' process they have to go into (I read all about it - how sad) could make a fortune down there with those species. YIKES! And it's not about the all mighty buck to me........ although of course EVERY breeder ought to be able to make a profit, it's only fair... they work their tails off.. especially if they are a good one! I just think the Down Under folks are missing out on some great species. Sad Sorry guys!

Hi Bih, yes that seems to be true.. But they also told me to make the aviary another shape.. Smile Anyway, you haven't decided yet... Smile Right? Smile

I think APollo wouldn't mind you adding subjects to the flock. (Loyal subjects) yet I think he would hate to share his throne with anybirdy!
