hi Sarah.
Great page. Birdie-Mack is very handsome!! Micky and B-Mack sure looks like they'll get on well.
As with the wing clips, from what i can see from the pics you have on the page, it looked like the secondaries had been cut as well. if that is the case, then no, they have butchered poor b-mack's wing! but I could be wrong, I can't really tell very well from the pic. Can you describe the wings for us please? meaning like how far/how many feathers on each wings did they trimmed off. My Apollo's left wings was butchered by the so called breeder, they cut all the feathers off except for the first three primary. That did nothing for Apollo as he was still very much abled to fly around the house!
Or otherwise compare the your newly trimmed micky's wing's to b-mack wings and see if there are any differences. i would hope that a vet knows how to trim the wings, but then again, i've heard horror story about that too! So you can never tell.
Basically a correct trim consist of cutting the first seven primary wing feathers just under it's covert (I think that's what they are called).
Anyway, i'm so glad that you were able to get Micky back! I'm so happy for the both of you. |

Hi! Thank you for responding! B-Mack has his first vet appointment (my vet doc is very nice) today. He will get a check up to make sure he is healthy and to also check his wings out for me. I'll let you know what I find out about his wings. I hope they are ok!
Micky an B-Mack are already the best of friends. I didn't think that would happen so fast. They want to always be close. |

Oh cool. can't wait to hear what the vet says. I'm sure b-mack is a very healthy bird!
I'm glad to hear that micky and b-mack is already best of friends. I can't believe how quick they had become friends! So cute. |

Hi Sarah! Wow! Birdie Mack is just gorgeous! I also saw the photo of you and your son.. He looks a lot like you, really!
I also enjoyed the other photos..
Sarah, I hope you don't think I'm nagging but.. I saw the way Micky & BM are clipped.. I know it's more pretty to leave the outer flight feathers unclipped but.. I'd strongly suggest to have them clipped and leave the covert feathers unclipped..
I hope you won't be insulted for me saying this? |

Hi, not bothered by any comments! I never knew there was an option. Still learning!
When I got the keet, unfortunately she was already clipped that way (the feathers that show). My vet did cut the longer ones, but only on one side. He told me that it may be looked at as cruel but because of her recent adventure he thought it was a good idea. I told him I would try it out first this way, but I told him that I would bring her back if I thought she was too bothered by it.
She has not slowed down at all and can still fly just enough to go from perch to cage etc. I don't like how it looks and I do feel bad about that. I am not going to have that done again though. Do you think I should get the other side cut too to make it look better or just leave it as is? I certainly don't want to make her life uncomfortable if I can help it! (I'll try to post a picture showing the other side)
The same story goes for the Tiel. When I got him his "outer" feathers were already cut. I always thought it looked odd, but I didn't know. At his vet apt. yesturday the doc. left those feathers alone, and left all but 1 (on each side) of the longer feathers.
It makes me wonder if the people who trimmed my birds (before I got them) even had any knowledge of what they were doing. It makes me sad to think my birds were "test" objects for newbies or something....
Thank you so much for your support! |

Hi Sarah I am so glad that you are not bothered..
Only on one side? That would be pretty harmful as birds can't keep their balance then!
There are many views on how to clip birds.. Yet I think that clipping
like this
is the best way.. (Though Iago is a bit short)
I'll be waiting for a photo of the other wing.. |

I really appreciate the knowledge you have. I certainly want to do things the best way possible.
I don't know what it is about my little Micky, but she really acts un-bothered by how her wings were clipped. I have not noticed any balance problems. It has been a few days since they were trimmed. I am going to remember all of this advice!!
This is a picture I just took a few minutes ago. It is so cute how she wants to go right on B-Macks cage in the morning (7:00am here).

Hi Sarah,
In my opinion, I think both wings should be trimmed. Having one side trimmed won't harm the bird so to speak, but it doesn't stop the bird from flying. If for some reason Micky gets out again, and caught a gust of wind, off she goes again. So I'd be very careful with the door as well if you're planning on keeping the otherside not trimmed.
I think the best way to trim wings feathers are trimming first seven primary feathers (the long ones counting from the furtherst out) I think bird has 9 primary on each wings. but not really sure, haven't counted them yet. hehe. The trim that leaves two the three longest primaries is what I've been told as the 'beauty' trim. It is not a proper trim as any bird with those feathers can still fly quite easily, and the feathers are kept so that the bird still looks 'natural'.. like they still have their wings.. but like I said, that doesn't stop them from flying at all! My first budgie flew away like that, though his feathers were grown in after a proper trim.
Is there a chance that you could take a pic with their wings spread out so I can get a better understanding on how their wings are trimmed please? |

Hi Sarah.. I hope Micky will continue not to be bothered..
But perhaps next time you can ask to have her wings trimmed the other way next time?
What a cute photo Sarah! I made a link of it, as the forum seems to be getting slower from posting pics in it?
(Nagging again LOL!) |

Thank you so much for the information! I am definately going to make sure my fids get their wings trimmed for not only my benefit, but for theirs as well. I think I will have Micky's evened out, even though she appears happy.
I wanted to make a link for the picture I added, but I didn't know how to do it here Thank you for making a link.
I got my Tiel out of his cage yesturday. He is "stick-trained" and prefers that over our finger for now....atleast to come out of his cage. Remember, he has been cage bound his entire life before coming to live with us! I am very proud to have gained some trust and atleast he knows he has a friend named Micky |
