| Just Got A New Baby Blue Male Budgie |
|
|
I was looking for a parrotlet, but could not find any Green Rumps or Spectacled and I would not have a Pacific because of all I have read online and in books about their nasty temperments and biting,so I decided to just get a safe, playful Budgie. I named him Bizzy. This is his first night here, and he watched me read Parakeet books and listened to me talk to my friend on the phone and tilted his head at me. I just got him about 4:30 pm and he did not eat tonight. But he seems calm. |

Yep he is eating fine, but I have not seen him touch his water yet, since I got him Friday evening. should I be concerned? I have tried giving him parsley, and tangerine pieces, but he ignored them. |

Be persistant with the veggies and he will eventually try them. Don't worry to much about not seeing him drink the water. It took me a couple of weeks before I saw my budgie drink.
How do you know it is a male? If it is a baby the cere will not have changed yet. Has he gone to the vet yet? I know that mine is female because I use to breed budgies and my vet confirmed my suspisions.
Do you have any pics? I love new pics |

Budgie drinks hardly any water. They probably gets about 2mls a day seriously. I got like Ten budgies... I hardly ever see them drinking water. so Don't stress out too much about that.
Try celery. I found that for some reason Budgies just love those celery. But try the leave rather than the stem though. Good luck. |

The ladies at the store believe he is a male because his cere is purplish blue. No,I haven't taken him to the vet yet, wanted him to be calm and comfortable first. I will try the celery leaves, but he really doesn't peck at anything yet.Just his small millet spray and seed on a piece of paper towel in a corner on the cage bottom. His cage has a wire grate. That you so much for the info. I have a mnew digital camera that I have never even used yet,so I need to get familiar with it,and I have no clue how to upload photos. So I have quite a bit to learn. BTW would you know if Pomegranetes are appealing and safe for Budgies? I had read somewhere that parrots like them,so I bought one to try. Thank you for reassuring me about the drinking. |

I believe they said my budgie was 12 weeks old. He is very calm when I change his water, ect but just is not vocalizing or preening or acting like he wants out yet.
When I got my parakeet as a child someone told my dad to set the cage like on an end table and not try to get the bird out for 4 days, and that was all it took. The 4th day she was clinging to the front of the cage and chirping and I opened the door and she hopped right onto my finger and was tame from that day,and her wings were never clipped. |

Pomegranetes are good for birds they are great for the kidneys. They are messy though so you might want to try somewhere that you don't mind getting stained because they stain!!
Well here is a hint about male vs female budgie babies. Females tend to have a white ring around their nostrils when they are babies.
It may take awhile for your bird to settle in. If you just work slowly with him then he should settle in. It took my budgie a few weeks of comming out of the cage before she really wanted to come out. It also took her awhile to start playing with her toys. Luckily it didn't take me long to convert her to pellet though Now she gets mad if I leave her sight. lol |

You baby is still probably getting used to the new environment and settling in. some birds will naturally take longer than others to settle in. My newest bunch of budgies When I first had them in quarantine, they were quiet as a mouse for like three weeks, than all of a sudden, there were an explosion of noise coming from the quarantine room. They've decided to break silence and play in their cage. So you see, there's nothing wrong with your little baby. Is it's wing clipped? can you just leave the door open while you're there? He'll come out on it's own, when it's good and ready to do that.
Good luck. And yes pomergranate is fine for budgies. |

Thank you for the info on the pomegranetes. I am pretty sure there is no white ring around Bizzy's nostrils. Yep, his wings are clipped, for probably the only time. Today he ate twice from his seed cup instead of the bottom of the cage so that was new. I also bought him a pot of wheat grass yesterday and gave it a trim and put the clippings in the seed cup,so he ate some of them today. I have some Zu-Preem pellets out for him,but he hasn't tried them yet.He preened a little today as well. |

Well that is good that he is starting to settle down. I hope you have fun with your new budgie
A tip for the pellets, once he is setteled in, a good trick you can try is to put some pellets on a mirror when he is out or someplace new. When he sees the bird in the mirror going for the pellets he will want to eat them first. This worked great for my little girl and she was completely converted in three days |
